Software Licensing Service Playing up RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a few Vista Machines on our network that occasionally have the
    following problem.

About every 2-3 days, this problem will come back.

    Symptoms:
Can't open control panel. The control panel will flash up briefly then
    close.
Can't print. No application is able to print.

    Temporary Fix.
A reboot doesn't always fix the problem.

After plenty of googling, I found a temporary solution. That is to restart
the "Software Licensing" service. This fixes the problem for a while, but it
comes back after a few days.

Another suggestion was to follow the instructions here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;313222
But that didn't seem to help.

I have now been referred here.

Here are the results from the MGA Diagnostic Tool on 2 PCs that this is happening on.

  • Hi Bob,

Again, Vista is showing completely Genuine, it is Activated and no Licensing files have been tampered, modified or become corrupt.

Because of this and since you have not mentioned that are you receiving any error messages. Such as being Non-Genuine or "You may be the victim of Piracy", the Anti-Piracy/WGA portion of Vista does not appear to be the root cause of your issue. I can only conclude that the issue is originating in another part of Vista and that the symptoms just happen to be similar to a Vista in a Non-Genuine state.

My recommendation is to contact Vista paltform support at http://support.microsoft.com or support from the computer"s manufacturer (which is your primary support provider).

You may also try installing Service Pack 1 for Vista. It's a long shot, but there is a possability that it could fix the issue.

Very sorry I couldn't be more help,

  • Hi Bob Bob,

It appears that when you ran the Diagnostic Reports, neither of the computers were experiencing the issue because neither of the report show anything wrong.

I suggest waiting for the issue to occur again, and while the computer is experiencing the issue, run the Diagnostic Report and repost the report here. Also, when the issue occures again, look for any error messages that may come up and post the messages here, as well.

You also have the option of creating a (no cost) email based support request at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52029, if that works for you better.

    Thank you,

    Darin Smith
