Windows Live OneCare Firewall will not turn on RRS feed

  • Question

  • I already had a windows firewall installed as well as defender, with both working properly.  However, when I encountered problems with Windows XP not being able to recognize several of the Mass Storage Devices connected to my USB ports, it was recommended that I run an Anti-Virus check on my computer.  My CA Anti-Virus had expired, so I decided to go to Circuit City and buy Windows Live OneCare for one year.  When I loaded it onto my computer, everything loaded properly, but I was getting a pop up in the lower right corner of my Windows task bar stating the following:  "Your computer might be at risk.  No firewall is turned on."  So, I went into my Windows Security Center to check to see if in fact the one I already had installed was working properly, and it was.  So it appears to be a conflict between the firewall in my security center that was originally installed and working, and the new firewall that was installed with Windows Live OneCare.  I did the complete routine of trying various repair suggestions:  "Repair issues related to problems turning on OneCare firewall...Fix Failed!  I checked in the Admin Services section and saw that the original firewall was started:  "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)."  Whenever I try to change the firewall settings in Live OneCare I get the following:  "OneCare can't change your firewall setting at this time.  Please try again later.  If the problem persists, contact OneCare Support."  Well, the problem has persisted, and yes I did contact OneCare Support.  I did all that was recommended on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913786 to no avail.  In addition, I went on Windows Live Help to the section on Configure the firewall, and did all that was recommended. still the problem persists.  I should have only downloaded the AV program by itself, and not spent the extra money for the complete package since I already had the firewall and defender installed.  One message that did appear during my vast amount of troubleshooting I do on this OS is the following:  "Could not start the OneCare Firewall service on local computer.  Error 1068:  The dependency service or group failed to start."  Also the program will not allow me to access Quick Links for some reason.  Nothing happens, and the "View Latest Monthly Report" is not accessible (faded out).

IT DOES SEEM THAT I SPEND AT LEAST 80 TO 90 PERCENT OF MY TIME TROUBLESHOOTING WINDOW OS PROBLEMS.  EITHER THEY ARE RELATED TO WRITE PROTECTED FILES THAT CANNOT BE DELETED FROM USB FLASH DRIVES, OR THE SYSTEM WILL NOT RECOGNIZE VARIOUS FLASH DRIVES I HAVE SUCH AS CENTON DATASTICK, SONY MICROVAULT, OR SANDISK U3 MICRO.  NOW, ONE PROBLEM HAS LEAD TO ANOTHER WITH THIS NEW ONE CROPPING UP!  IT DOES SEEM THAT I ENCOUNTER NEW PROBLEMS BEFORE THE OLD ONES ARE SOLVED!  IT DOES APPEAR THAT VERY LITTLE IF ANY BETA TESTING WAS DONE EITHER BY MS OR THE MFRS OF THESE USB STORAGE DEVICES PRIOR TO MANUFACTURING.  THE LOGO THAT THEY ARE "WINDOWS COMPATIBLE" IS DISSINGENUOUS TO SAY THE LEAST, IF NOT OUT-RIGHT MISSLEADING, LYING, AND FALSE ADVERTISING!  I NEED TO BE MORE PRODUCTIVE ON MY COMPUTER, NOT SPENDING ALL MY TIME TROUBLESHOOTING SOFTWARE/HARDWARE INTERFACE PROBLEMS THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN WORKED OUT BY OS MFRS LONG AGO.  THESE PROBLEMS PERSIST ON INTO THEIR NEW OS VISTA, AND HAVE NEVER BEEN CORRECTED AS CAN BE SEEN BY THE NUMBER OF NEGATIVE POSTINGS RELATED TO USB MASS STORAGE DEVICES.

  • I'm sorry that you've had problems with OneCare and Windows.

My recommendation is that you contact support once again to report that the problem has not been fixed.

Note that OneCare is a complete package and the antivirus on its own can't be purchased/installed.

When OneCare is installed, it turns off the Windows Firewall and Defender as OneCare brings this protection as part of the package. If the Windows Firewall could not be disabled by OneCare due to some problems underlying on your system, the OneCare firewall will conflict and probably fail to operate properly.

If you are fed up with troubleshooting the OneCare firewall problem, you may be able to obtain a refund for your box copy:
