How does the process of adding CALs work? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it like Exchange server, where you purchase the CAL to hold for record, or does the CAL come with a license code that gets entered into the CRM management program?

  • The CRM license key indicated the number of users. Like Leon said, you can apply that through Deployment manager.  I believed CRM 4.0 license is little different than earlier versions of CRM. It will not stop users from access CRM if you over the limit.

    I hope this helps!

  • If you have the trial version, then you have the full version. They are the same. The trial version will expired after 30 days or 90 days. Workgroup edition only allows 5 users, you can't add license to a workgroup edition to add more users.

  • You need to add the license code into CRM via the deployment manager so CRM knows how many users you are allowed to create.

  • We currently only have hte Action Pack workgroup version and a trial professional version, so I have never been able to see the real license screen to know what to expect in a full version.

    Thanks.

  • No, if you add more users than CALs, they're automatically created as disabled.

  • So how does CRM know how many licenses you have?  When you purchase additional CALs, is there a place in the deployment manager where you enter a code?  Or is the licensing structure simlar to Server 2003, where you enter the number of users you are licensed for , and you are extra careful about maintaing records of your CAL ownership (so hopefully they send those nice certificates like you get for Server 2008 CALs).

  • Yes, as stated above, the license code is entered via the Deployment Manager and this tells CRM how many active users you're allowed to have.

  • No this is not correct for CRM 4. I just tested this. In CRM 3, if you add additional users, they are always added as disabled and then you have to manage your enabled users but this is not the case for CRM 4. You can add additional users and they will be added as enabled users. Now it is more of an ethical and legal thing that you should not add more users than the licensed ones.
