Windows Vista Suddenly not Authentic RRS feed

  • Recently, after about a year of using it, my copy of vista has become unauthentic. I can't open the control panel and things run slower because of the reduced functionality. I've looked for fixes on the internet that include restarting the software licensing service, a microsoft hotfix, and reentering the product key on the bottom of my laptop to reactivate. I can't restore to an earlier point. I tried to run slui.exe 4 but an error came up with the error code 0x80070426. What is there left that I can do?

  • Hi Freak130y,

       The problem is that your Vista's Software Licensing Service has stopped. Vista uses this service to check itself and confirm it is Genuine. When the service is stopped, Vista is unable to confirm it's own Genuine status and may show Genuine or Non-Genuine. The fact that the Service has stopped is also, most likely, the cause of other issues you may be experiencing (such as not having access to the Control Panel).

      Normally this is not a big problem, since you can just restart the Service. However, we have seen a number of users that receive an error when they attempt to restart the Service. This indicates a more serious 'root cause' to the service having stopped.

      What I would like you to do is to try to restart the service using the 'Service Restart' steps, below. If the service won't restart, you will receive an error.

     

    Service Restart steps:

    (If you have access to the Start button):

    1)    Click the Start button

    2)    Type: cmd in the Start Search field

    3)    At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe

    4)    Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5)    Type: net start slsvc

     

    (If you do not have access to the Start button):

    1)    Click the option that launches an Internet Browser

    2)    A Browser will open, type: %windir%\system32 into the address field

    3)    Find the file cmd.exe

    4)    Right Click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5)    Type: net start slsvc

     

    A)   If the error message is "System Error 3, The system cannot find the path specified." or "System Error 2, The system cannot find the file specified": Go to the main Vista Validation forum page http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinevista/threads/, look in the announcement section and follow the steps found in thread "Fix for ‘Software Licensing service Has Stopped’ on some Vista 64bit systems"

     

    B)   If you receive any other error (System Error 5, System Error 57346 or System Error 54273): These occur as a result of massive file corruption.  We do not know what the root cause of the corruption is and this can be caused by any situation where files could be corrupted. However, from troubleshooting others that had this issue, the likeliest causes are either Malware Infection or failing Hard Drive. The only resolution we can suggest is reinstall Vista.

     

    If you receive no System Error and the Service start but then stops almost immediately: Something is apparently activity stopping the service. Most likely caused by some other dependent Windows Service or possibly a Malware infection. While the Software Licensing Service, itself, is part of the Anti-piracy sub-system, the running (and stopping) of Windows Services is a Vista core system that I have no insight to and is supported by Vista support at http://support.microsoft.com

  • I am having the same issue. Owned and operated Vista for well over a year now and all of a sudden it's alerting that it's unauthentic. Now I bought my copy through the University of Texas so I know it's not pirated and I want an answer. Soon.

  • Try the following procedure:

    1) Open an Internet Explorer browser window.

    2) Type %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.

    3) Find the file CMD.exe

    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'

    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing

    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32

    9) Type net start slsvc

    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)

    11) Restart your computer twice.

    12) You may be required to Re-Activate. Use the Activate by Phone method as outlined here:

    You can reset your Windows Vista activation by performing the following:

    1. Click on the Start button and in the Start Search box type in:  slui.exe 4

    2. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.

    3. Select your Country.

    4. Follow the instructions for phone activation.

    5.  Once completed, restart your computer.

    6. Afterward, visit
    Genuine Microsoft Software and click on Validate Windows, then restart your computer.

  • I attempted these steps and it went well until the "cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc". Afterwards it showed "C:\Windows\System32\slmgr.vbs <1634, 5> <null>:  0xC0000022" in the command prompt. I thought I'd give the restart a try anyways, but it is still doing the same thing. 
    The error on the slui.exe 4 says that "The service has not been started",so I thought this might mean the software licensing service. After I started the service and tried the .exe again it says "An error has ocurred". The details on the error were 0xC0020012 with a description of "The interface is unknown".

    Looks like I'm also SOL receiving a 57346 after running net start slsvc in cmd.exe...

    I got my PC thru BELL, pre-loaded, have no installation CDs or DVDs...what am I to do?

    Why are SO MANY of us having this same issue?

  • It is really annoying! my software is all "authentic" and original. yet still I have these annoying pop ups and from what I hear I wont be able to update once i am marked as not authentic and I dont know what to do about it. Thank you microsoft. I am a very busy self employed and I have far better things to do!!! Time to buy a mac!
