Look on the bottom of the laptop for a Certificate of Authenticity for a Windows Operating System.  If there is a COA, that will tell you which Windows that the laptop came with from the manufacturer....it's very likely that the laptop is STILL licensed to run that Windows.

Presuming that the laptop does have a COA, if you do not have any CDs or materials with which you can install the authorized version of Windows, then your fist step would be to contact the laptop's manufacturer to see if you can buy the CDs tha originally came with the laptop.  In most cases they only charge a small fee, say $20-30 for the CDs.
