Backspace Changes Font

Question

Say you are composing a reply. Now say you type this:
xxx yyy zzz
Now put your cursor between the yyy and the zzz. Hit "return", then hit "backspace". Notice how the "zzz" is suddenly and inexplicably rendered in a smaller font. There appears to be no way to restore it to its original size, short of using "undo".
Why does this happen? I can't count the number of times I've had to redo part of a comment because of this idiocy.

Hello Mr. Roberts.
This is an awfully old bug, already discussed and apparently impossible to fix.
My workaround to fight it is edit HTML directly and remove the font attribute in <span> :-\
By the way, your method of reproing this does not work here on Edge, win10 1809.

Well, let's be clear that there's a difference between "can't be fixed" and "won't bother to fix".
Fortunately, all of the links here pointed me to a nice workaround: select the text, Ctrl-C, Shift-Ctrl-V. Clears up the issue.
