internet and mesh

Question

Hi,
Something very strange happened. I was browsing internet. I signed out of mesh using system trey icon. Then a private message appeared, I clicked on it, and it opened an internet page (25 GB of free online mesh storage) and showed an arrow to go to windows live sky dive. Ok, nice feature. But, in my network sharing center shows (XXXX Network) local access only. According to it, I am not connected to the internet. But, in my browser, I can still browse internet sites. This is the only pc that both mesh and onecare is installed. I'm not sure if they are related. Does anyone have ideas on what just happened or how to correct it?

I suspect that you encountered a Vista issue, Diana, with the Network and Sharing Center incorrectly identifying that you were not connected. Signing out of Live Mesh does not disconnect you from the network or Internet.

The Remote Desktop connection will timeout if you are not actively using the connection. This is by design, Diana.

Internet is working fine now. From my base pc, I was able to control my laptop remotely. On mesh desktop, it showed my laptop desktop. I could open files, open programs on my laptop desktop from my base pc. I added photos of my laptop being remotely controlled by my base pc in my mesh fhoto album on skydrive. Very cool.

This is feedback, When using mesh on a remote system, after 10 minutes of no activity, it times out. It should timeout when I tell it to. Suppose that I am doing something on a remote computer, and I have to stop, to go file some papers or talk on the phone or excedra, if I take longer than 10 min. it should still be there, not timed out.

Diana, is the connection actually timing out or is the remote computer going to sleep after ten minutes of inactivity therefore terminating the connection?

Hi Jim,
I have my computers set to never sleep. Display is always on moniter. In the mesh desktop, I could still see the remote computer, but the screen was shaded or darkened, and it sayed after 10 minutes of inactivity, the remote computer timed out. The connection was still there. By clicking on the screen, the remote desktop of the other computer showed normally

Hi Steve,
Thanks for explaining that. That is the first time I have seen the vista network and sharing center mess up. I didn't know it would do that. As far as the time out, if it it by design, maybe the developers can change that default to not time out, if you chose that option. Thanks for your reply

You're welcome, Diana. I'm not saying that the network issue was normal and it certainly could have been caused by OneCare's firewall, but I've seen the Network and Sharing Center display go out of whack in the past on machines without OneCare.
For the timeout issue, I suspect that there's already a suggestion on it.
