HP Compaq purchased from Fry's for personal use, Fails Validation

Question

Hi,
My Wife's computer suddenly started showing a Microsoft Validaton issue. We have had the machine over 4 years, keep up on the updates, and recently, did extensive Malware, Spyware, cleaning. The computer came pre-loaded with XP Professional and has the "Certificate of Authenticity" on the top of the computer housing. I am not sure how to proceed. This computer seems to be taken away from us and we are left high and dry. What am I missing? I do notice that the Product key in the diagnostic report is different from the key on the top of the computer.
