This Copy Of Windows Is Not Genuine - Product Key Does Not Work RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've had this laptop for a while now and recently I have been receiving  notifications every time I start Windows up that I don't have an activated Windows OS.

I'm running Windows 7 Starter and I at first never had time to try and see what the whole problem was all about but when I tried retyping the product key it said:

"The Product Key you have entered appears to be a default product key and cannot be used for activation. Type a different Windows 7 Starter product key.

Below is my Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool Info:

Input Error: Can not find script file "C:\Windows\system32\slmgr.vbs".

    Try recreating the licensing store:

    Recreate the Licensing Store

        1) Click Start button.

        2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field

        3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator

        4) Type: net stop sppsvc   (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.

        5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

        6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

        7) Type: cd %windir%\system32

        8) Type: net start sppsvc

        9) Type: slui.exe

        10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

Reboot, then run MGADiag again, and post the report

The product key in your report is the default key windows uses when no key is entered during install. You will have to enter the product key on your COA.

  • I did as you said and when I retyped the product key I received the same message. When I run the MGADiag again though, I'm not able to "Copy" the info and receive a message saying:

Failed to create output files, hr = 0x800700002. Please contact support.

I did however found the same steps in another forum before creating this forum and the MGADiag info I gave are the same that I got after I ran all the steps you mentioned.

The error message simply means that the tool couldn't save the files to disk - the data iss still copied to the clipboard, and can be pasted to your response.
