I have an HP windows 64 bit ultimate desktop.  While examining a firewall rule I lost Internet connectivity. I went back to a previous restore point but now when windows boots it display a message saying 'the license key I typed' for windows ultimate is invalid. Taking the option to enter the key as shown on the genuine sticker on the PC results in

code 0xc004f050 "the software licensing service reported the key is invalid"

I have called the OEM, and they say it is a MS issue. They have agreed to try and arrange a conference call with MS. Of course MS was closed except for the phone number that would let me buy a license key!  The MS person was very sympathetic and agreed that I should call MS during working hours and explain the situation. I will try that tomorrow but in the mean time I though I would post this here as it seems to be a common problem with Vista - just deciding the key is no good and refusing to take the key the OEM key shipped with the machine.  I have spent 4 -5 hours on this so far.

I know software sometimes screws up and MS (and I) do not like software piracy but it would be nice if these issues could be resolved 24/7 I can provide all the serial numbers etc. , the product is registered with HP. HP says they cannot give out corrected / working product keys - that must come from MS. I imagine MS will point the finger to HP for issuing a bad key.

Any way those are my thoughts. Is there is possibility to have this type of issue solved 24/7?

    Thanks

    Hello jwprice,

To resolve you issue, all that must be done is to Activate by Phone. The Activation call center is not the same as Microsoft Support (that you get to by going to support.microsoft.com).  The Activation Call Center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The phone number for the Activation call center is specific to your location in the world. You will select your location from the drop down in the Activate by Phone wizard and the wizard will supply the phone number for your local 24/7 Activation Call Center.

To use the Activate by Phone method, please follow the below directions:

    a) If you have access to the Start button: Click the Start button, and type in "slui.exe 4" in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.

    b) If you do not have access to the Start button: Reboot and login to Vista, a dialog window will come up. In that window, click the option "Access computer with reduced functionality". Once you do that, Internet Explorer or Firefox browser will open. In the address bar type "c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe" press enter, a new window will come up, type: slui 4 and hit enterand follow steps to Activate over the Phone.

NOTE: The key to this process is that you need to talk to a Live Activation Rep! When you first call, you will be interacting with an Automated Voice, either select the option to talk to a Live Rep or if there is no option, do not enter any numbers. This should force the automated voice to tansfer you to a Live Rep.

  • This is precisely the problem I reported in the "HUGE issue with Vista" thread a few threads below.

Of several dozen machines deployed, two of them suddenly are receiving the 0xC004F050 Product Key Invalid issue today, at around 6PM PDT.  Of course, the 1-866 activation numbers can do nothing with product key issues, which is particularly frustrating as these are genuine media + COA and activated/working for almost 2 months.

Trying to re-enter the product key, and you'll be greeted by a slightly different error code, but same message (Product key is invalid), even with valid keys.

It's not the issue that is frustrating- it's Microsoft's lack of 24/7 support to deal with these kinds of issues.  If licensing/product key and genuine advantage lock you out of using your PC, especially in this case erroneously deeming valid product keys as invalid, then the method of rectifying these needs to be 24/7.
