  • Question

  • I have a personal website ...
    http://www.cemh.eclipse.co.uk/FrameCEMH.html
... which I am trying to get crawled properly despite the frames.  I had some initial difficulties but I think they are sorted now.  I think any crawler should now be able to find its way around the site and completely index it.

Indeed I think Live MSN has done this, because about 2 days ago it started often to rank my tune "Sally In The Woods" high on the first page when this  title is searched as a quoted phrase.  Often, but not always.  Every now and then the listing is *completely* different  -  so completely different that it's bizarre.

Is there a server somewhere with a hopelessly out of date cache or something?

  • JavaJive,

You may be seeing a caching error,  but I will have to look into it further before I can say for sure.   If it is any kind of caching or replication issue, it is not something that will be fixed overnight.  I will file some bugs and see if we can triage the issue for you.

  • When you say, "completely" different, are we talking different results or a reference to a page you updated?

So although there are some results in common, there are more that are completely different!

In all, it looks as though the first set of results is out of date and missing the entries from the second.

PS:  Meant to mention that, ironically, Google has this very thread on p3 of their results for the same term, yet doesn't list my original page at all, while Live MSN doesn't list this discussion at all!  It's a strange world ...

  • Any news yet, it's been over a week now?

It's still happening ... Eg: today within the last hour is very typical:

    1)   Search Live MSN for "Sally In The Woods"
    2)   Page 1 is as labelled 'anomalous' above (that is, apparently out of date)
    3)   Click Page 2, then Page 1  -  still anomalous
    4)   Click Page 3, then Page 1  -  Page 1 is now up to date!

Other times I have had to get to Page 4 before the system seems to correct itself.

Knowing a bit about systems generally, but nothing about this one in particular, I'd guess that of a handful of machines sharing an IP, one or more has an out of date index cache.  Repeated searches going to that IP sooner or later finds one with an up-to-date index.  But this is all just guesswork, because noone is giving me any real info to go on :-(

BTW, if it makes any difference, I'm searching from the UK.

  • Not sure what happened to the original body of this message, but I was intending to say that even the results that I had described as 'good' above, the ones showing my site, were also out-of-date.

I noticed. rather belatedly perhaps, that the results linked to the frame container page ...

    http://www.cemh.eclipse.co.uk/Macfarlane/Music/SallyInTheWoods/FrameSallyInTheWoods.html

... instead of the contents page ...

    http://www.cemh.eclipse.co.uk/Macfarlane/Music/SallyInTheWoods/SallyInTheWoods.html

... whereas the frame container pages were marked with the robots noindex meta tag on or before the 10th May.  Investigating further, I realised that of the 75 hits for "site:http://www.cemh.eclipse.co.uk", two are invalid, and the rest point to the frame containers instead of the contents.

So it looks as though the results which I have labelled above as 'anomalous' and 'good' are all out of date, the 'good' just being less so than the 'anomalous'.  Of course, that still doesn't explain at all why there's an alternation between the two sets of results, which I guess there shouldn't be ...

  • Thought it was about time I called back to say that I'm still getting differing results when I check my website, similar to above.

For example, yesterday Live Search for site:http://www.cemh.eclipse.co.uk, initially 53 pages found (40 missing out of 83 in site map), but, after going through the first two or three pages, then going back to page 1, 106 results, 23 more than in site map!  (Of these 23, some were duplicates, others should not have been indexed, and there are also still pages missing altogether, but I'm going to raise that as a seperate issue).

The point is that that the number of hits is still inconsistent, it seems to vary *greatly* over short periods of time, and possibly also depending on how one browses the results (that is going deeper into the results seems to find more).

  • 53 pages found (40 missing out of 83 in site map).

As, though you wouldn't believe it reading that, I have a good maths degree, I can categorically state that is wrong!

    30 missing, of course ...
