Backup Schedule

Question

Few q's regarding backups:
When does Folder Duplication take place? Throughout the day or a certain time at night?
How about Computer Backup?
Can the backup times be adjusted or configured?
Where are the Computer Backup's stored? Are they duplicated across 2 hard drives too? If not, if the hard drive that contains them fails then they're lost?
I'm thinking of putting all "My Documents" in my user folder on the WHS. What are the pro and cons of doing this? If they're in a folder set for duplication then there will be 2 copies. If they are on my local PC then there will just one backup when the WHS does a Computer Backup...correct?
Any other backup tips are appreciated. Thanks,

1- Throughout the day, as long as the server is running.
2- During the backup window, which you set in the Console. Each PC is backed up at a randomly-selected time in that window, so long as it's on (or in standby/hibernation/sleep, if you've configured it to wake for backups), and on your LAN.
3- Yes. The backup window can be changed in the Console. This affects all computers.
4- No, computer backups are not backed up themselves, nor are they duplicated. However, as Ken is fond of saying, the backup database is essentially fungible. If you lose it, you'll simply recreate it from the PCs themselves after you've recovered the server.
5- The only 'con' that I can think of is network latency (if you have issues), as well as the fact that if the server isn't running, you don't have access to your files. However, it does work - I have my sister's user folders redirected to her share on the WHS, primarily so that she can have access to her docs from offsite (say, school.) And, you're correct in your assessment - if your redirected folders are on a duplicated share, then, yes, they're duplicated across two (or more, depending on your config) hard drives.
You should read the technical briefs on WHS, too:
Remote Access
Drive Extender
Backup and Restore
Media Sharing

Regarding backing up your backups and duplicated folders to an external drive...
I've read where WHS was supposed to have this included originally but was taken out.Does PP2 add this in?
No.
I beleive I saw a link to a topic about backup backups (I think it was on this forum). Sound faminiar anyone?
It can be done. You can either follow the steps provided in the Home Computer Backup and Restore Technical Brief, or you can use the BDBB (Backup Database Backup) add-in.
When backing up backups and duplicated folders, is it possible to have single instance enabled?
No. The backup database and the network shares are two separate features. Any single file that exists in both locations (such as a photo on both your client and in the Photos share on the server) will be backed up twice.
Example: We have some identical pictures in different folders. If we do a cloud backup I would like to have only a single copy. This would have to be done by the backup procedure itself or the cloud backup service. I don't think any of the cloud backup services do this. Same idea as WHS doing the Single Instance thing when backing up computers.
Thanks again

1- Throughout the day, as long as the server is running.
More accurately, WHS runs a pass across the drives every 60 minutes and will duplicate any data that is set to be duplicated during those passes.
2- During the backup window, which you set in the Console. Each PC is backed up at a randomly-selected time in that window, so long as it's on (or in standby/hibernation/sleep, if you've configured it to wake for backups), and on your LAN.
