I have created a few duplicate detection rules in CRM 4.0. The detections are working correctly by warning me that I am adding a lead that is already in the system. My question is, can you update the exisiting contact or lead in the system with the information that I have already entered in the duplicate record.
Ex: I create a Lead named John Doe with the Company Name field of ABC Company. I have a duplicate detection rule setup to check the Lead Company Name field against all existing Account Names. If the rules finds that there is already an ABC Company account in the system is there a way to just add John Doe as a contact, or must I cancel the lead insert and start over by retyping the person in as a contact?
Also if my dupe detection settings finds an existing Lead or contact in the system, is there a way to update the exisiting fields with the new fields that I have already typed in?
Ex: I create John Doe, I find that John Doe is already in the system, can I update the exisiting phone number and email fields with the ones I just typed in or must I cancel and open the exisiting record?
I assume this can be done with a workflwo but do not know where to begin.
Since you have a few questions, it might be easier if I copy each here and then respond.

You can save the Lead or Contact Record and then merge it with the existing record in CRM by using the Merge feature.

You can continue to enter and save the Lead and then convert it to a Contact and associate it with the ABC Company or Account record.
