Adding WD Advanced Format drives - my solution RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I had 2 WD10EARS drives attached to a WHS v1 and wanted to move them to my Vail server. It seemed simple enough - remove the drives from the storage on the v1 box, remove the compatibility jumper, hook up to Vail system, add to storage pool.

Well, it didn't go so smooth. My Vail server (Dell T110, UEFI boot) would not boot with the WD10EARS hooked up. Everything worked if I left the compatibility jumper in place, but I wanted the drive to run natively. I ended up leaving the drive power cable hooked up but not the SATA cable, booting the system, hooking up the drive, rescanning with the storage mangement, and adding the drive. Once the system formatted the drive and added it to the pool, everything was just fine and the system would reboot normally.

It seems to be a side effect of having the drive in compatibility mode on the v1 system. In any case, I hope this helps someone in a similar situation.
