Restore after hard drive crash and reformat RRS feed

  • Question

  • My C drive went belly up, but fortunately I have been using backup. Unfortunately, now that I've reinstalled windows over a freshly formatted hard drive -- I no longer have One Care, or SP2, or much of anything else.

I have the external drive that I've used for my backups, but browsing it I don't see anything that looks like a program that I should run to get myself back to the pre-crash state.

What do I do from here?

  • You should install all critical updates and service packs before attempting to install One Care. You may not have all of the Windows components installed that One Care needs for installation and operation.

  • Compounding the problem, when I try to download livecare, IE just gives me an error, likely because it's upteen patches behind the times since it just came off a disc from 2003.  Clicking the link to this site:

  • This is extremely frustrating. I can apparently download any other file just fine, but I either get the message above on attempting to download onecare, or the file downloads only a tiny bit of data, which gives me a "not a Windows 32 app" when I try to run it. Is there another link to download onecare that doesn't use whatever oddball mechanism this one is using?

  • Jim is correct. You must update XP to the latest Service Pack and apply all critical and important updates before trying to install OneCare. That also includes installing at least IE7.

  • Got everything laboursly updated, which over my slow connection took all night.  Got onecare downloaded and installed.  Started into restore and... the instructions say to select "Express restore," but I don't see any such option.

I select "restore files" it gives me a menu where I can select either of the two external drives. I pick the one that has the backups, and it comes up with a dialog showing the name of the PC and the date of the first backup. I select this, hit next and... long delay.  Finally, I get the choice to "restore all files" or be more selective in my restore.  Where is the "express restore" option that's mentioned in the instructions?

  • You won't have an Express restore as the backup is actually a backup from another PC - since you rebuilt the PC.
You can restore all files to bring everything back.

In the instruction below, start with Restore from another computer -

      Restore files from a backup

If your computer goes through a hardware failure or if some of your files are deleted from your computer and you've backed up your files, you can restore the files to your computer from a previous backup. If you're using a hub PC, you can restore backup files from any computer in your OneCare circle. You can choose which files to restore and which backup to restore the files from.

To restore all files from a backup:

    1. Open Windows Live OneCare.
    2. In the main OneCare window, in the Backup and Restore area, click Restore files.
    3. Click Restore files from a local backup.
    4. Click Express Restore.

        4. Decide whether you want to restore files that have the same name as files that are already stored on your computer, click the appropriate option, and then click Next.
