  • onecare wants to install office updates one this machine, they always fail to install 7 or so updates. Also the Network lost local logons to 3 of the 5 computuers. 2 XP machines. 1 Vista basic won't talk. the other 2 machines are vista home premium chat with other. My central back up are was on the 1 of those other machines then tried another 1 can't log on the other is a 30 gig notebook. Oh the 2 XP machines can be viewed by each other. The Basic machine sees 1 of the XP machines and the 2 other Vista machines but cannot open any files on anything...

I have read tons on firewall and what ever else networking. Nothing I have found restores anything. web/bing searched networking XP and Vista. did the technet thing. Tried Network Magic on this machine and can see all machines but can't log on to the others...

I had a router crash and replaced it and lost all this, onecare would not let me do nothing and updates wanted to install, everthing else via networking crash... I got no clue on this anymore. No hardware or software change just changed the router. Had a Linksys 8 port router, did a Belkin 4 port router with an 8 port switch attached for the replacement. No local buy on another linksys 8 port.
How do I restore the network settings for all the machines so the can share with each other? and get the security updates installed?

  • OneCare doesn't do updates - that would be Windows Update. OneCare simply checks to make sure that you have installed the latest security updates offered by Windows Update.
For your network issues, since you replaced the router, you will need to go to each machine, open OneCare and configure the firewall - identifyng the nework as Home or Work.
Here's the steps for the firewall/network:

Open OneCare on each of the computers.

    Click Change Settings

On the firewall tab, click configure firewall

If the network is shown as Public, click Change Location to change it to "Home or Work."

    Click the Advanced Settings button

    Click Network connections tab.

If there are multiple active connections shown, you may need to disable the extras in your Windows network connections settings. (Network and Sharing Center, manage connections, in Vista; Right click My Network Places and select Properties on the Start menu in XP)

On the Ports and Protocols tab, add a check mark next to File and Printer Sharing - for subnet and Internet if the first setting alone (after all of the above are verified) does not allow Sharing to work.

If all of the above fail, please contact support.

    For the update problems:

Although, since OneCare is alerting you about the missing updates, you can also contact OneCare support for that issue.
