SQL Express 2008 R2 <-> SQL Express 2008 R2 : Walkthrough / Example? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I found this code example http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/Database-SyncSQL-Server-a9752fac. But it's a whole lot of code for a newbie who's overwelmed with syncproviders etc.

    When adding a local data cache item to my vs2010 project I get this clean wizard creating a sqlce database, including the required sync functionality. There is no way to change the local database to a SQL Express version. I managed (quite easily due to that wizard) to create a sync between a sql express and a sqlce local database. The wizard does not allow another type of local database.

    But I need to be able to sync between two sql express 2008 versions. The lack of stored procedures and the expected amount of data is just not fit for sqlce. Hence my question above:

    Is there a walkthrough to create the code to sync between two sql express databases? Maybe a simple (very basic) code example? Possibly some video material?

    Regards,

    Alex

  • The Local Database Cache wizard doesnt support Sql Express and there is no official SqlExpress offline provider other than a sample provider  which unfortunately is no longer in the Sync Fx code samples site.

    The documentation that comes with the Sync Framework 2.1 installation contains a step by step walkthrough of synching using the SqlSyncProvider. see: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff928700(v=SQL.110).aspx SqlServer, Sql Azure and SqlExpress uses the same SqlSyncProvider, so the tutorial in that link should work with SqlExpress to SqlExpress sync.

  • Please note that the main purpose of the SqlExpress sample is to show folks a way to write their own sync providers, just as a starting point. we would highly recommend you to use the shipping sqlsyncproviders to build sync applications between Sqlexpress and sqlExpress.
