  • You appear to have reinstalled Vista using retail media, rather than the manufacturer's Recovery media - the Key here is not valid because the licenses in the media aren't there.

     You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment),  using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.

    You may need to activate by phone.

  •  Microsoft sent me this replacement install DVD, I have my case # and who I talked to when my computer crashed with Microsoft, so why do I need to change the product key number.

  • ... because the Key in use is ONLY valid when used with the manufacturer's Recovery media - you MUST use the Key from the COA sticker with anything else.
