Backup of other computers than Windows RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have at home several computers with different OS, e.g. Linux, Win 7, Win Vista, and Mac. How do I configure the WHS to automatically back up all of them?

  • Windows 7 and Vista are no problem. Install the connector and your server can back them up. For Linux, you will have to create a backup strategy which backs the computer up to a share. For Mac, HP includes a tool which allows a Time Machine backup to your server, or if you've built your own server, this blog post should help you out.

  • Thanks Ken for your quick answer. I need to learn more about the Linux strategy, but for now the Mac issue is more pressing. As I have a Fujitsu and not HP server, do you know if they also have that Mac tool as HP has?

  • HP developed the tool, so no. But all it really does is automate the process of setting up Time Machine to back up to a network share, something Apple really doesn't seem to want it to do.
