  • Question

  • Microsoft has apparently allowed various retailers to now offer downloadable
versions of Office 2010 retail products to be sold by other than Microsoft
store.  I got word from another poster in an Answers forum that Dell is now
providing online download of purchased software.  I did check their site and
found downloads for all retail versions of Office 2010 and all of the
stand-alone programs (Word, Access, Excel, etc. also) Don't know what other
retailers are allowed by Microsoft to do this but these certainly appear to
be genuine downloads from a reputable company.  Looks like we need to change
our "only purchased from Microsoft Store and downloaded from Digital River"
    boilerplate text.

"Dell has become the first non-Microsoft company allowed to sell downloadable Microsoft products at its Dell Download Store. The agreement, announced Thursday, gives Dell the right to sell Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Expression Web and similar Microsoft programs directly to online customers."

It would seem that Dell has been selling downloadable copies of Office since around June 11.  I can't confirm, but it does appear that the download is being served by Dell itself, thru it's Dell Download Store (https://downloadstore.dell.com), not Digital River.

Currently they appear to only be selling downloadable Office Suits and standalone Office products. However, it's unclear if they will start offering downloadable Windows, as well.  I do not know if any additional companies have been granted permission to also do this.

  • Hello LVTravel,

Please provide links to this info at Dell.  Thanx! :-)

Edit:  Found the items on their site.  What remains unknown is after the buyer pays, do they get redirected to the Microsoft Store or do they get redirected to a Digital River download, or do they actually download directly from Dell?  I am not about to spend $499 to buy Office Pro to find out!!! :-)

Dan look at this http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/category. aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&category_id=4020& ;~ck=anav&nf=2299%7e0%7e266587&p=1  - you can then scroll down the remainder of the pages (most start on page 2 and further.)  They are selling both the DVD and downloadable.  Look for "Download - program name" directly below Microsoft Corporation and then "Usually Ships via email link by end of next bus. day" on the lines directly below the program name.

You can also click the downloadable programs link on the left side of the page to see all their downloads.

This is a worrisome development.  Don't know who is running the file server for these downloads but I hope it is Digital River.
