Word Automation RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

I'm looking to automate Word from CRM, as I need to format and transfer 1:M type data into Word the standard Mail merge features aren't quite what I'm after.

Any URLs or advice to do this greatly appreciated!

  • You may have reached the 62 field limit in creattion of the custom template in CRM. If that detail is not enough you may consider a custom report in SRS.
    How detailed is the document.

  • Thanks for such a prompt reply Curt.

Fairly detailed : For our quotes, typically the Schedule of Works (Day 1, Day 2 etc) - the Many data,  is listed on separate rows in a table in Word.

Also we group charges together on the quote, so I would need to sum these where appropriate.

  • I've tried in vain to get a complicated document like that to work.  I had found that I had to use the formulas in Word to have fields summed.
It's difficult to format and CRM it will have to be stored in the template.     On a project, we burned too much time trying to make it work so we created a custom SRS report instead.   That we accomplished in a day.     Time to hit the SRS trail.  The up side is that reports are not that hard in CRM.

Save yourself the trouble and  use the better tool.
All that being said, I love the templates in CRM but they have their limitations as do many things in software.

I hope this gets you in the right direction.

  • Thanks very much for your reply Curt.

    In code could I :

Generate a Word object, and open a template with bookmarks.
Write a SQL statement to get back the appropriate data, and drop it into a data set in memory.
Transfer that data into the bookmarks.

What do you think? From your reply maybe this can't be done?  may be I'm being too simplistic?

Sorry to bang on!  I just want to explore any avenues... Can SRS reports be exported into Word? as on occasions my users will want to edit the documents.

    Thanks very much

  • Joe

you can do this, you need to get data from  crm and add it to office file (*.docx, etc) content controls.
Please read about [Word 2007 Content Control Toolkit].

It will give you idea how can you automate office 2k7 files
