Replacement for WHS 11 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello:

I'm ready to retire my WHS11 due to its age and issues with some of the new disk structures.

I was told that Windows Server 2016 or 2019 Essentials will perform the same backup/restore processes as WHS11.  Does anyone have experience with that?  I'm a VBA programmer, not a server administrator, and I want a simple graphical interface, not a command line interface.

Anyone with experience in those Essential products?  Are they a good replacement for WHS11?  Like WHS11, do they keep multiple backup versions where you can select a previous backup and selectively restore files?

Can you boot from a bare metal system via a DVD or CD, and then restore an image by selecting which of multiple images you want to restore?

Does it allow up to 10 workstations to be backed up without purchasing 10 CALS?

    Thanks in advance.

  • From a MS page:

Windows Server Essentials Experience Role has been deprecated

The Windows Server Essentials Experience Role has been removed from all server SKUs, including Windows Server 2019 Essentials. This means that the Administrative Dashboard that used to be the core feature for Essentials Experience Role is no longer accessible and all management and configuration must be completed manually.

With Server Essentials Experience Role deprecation, the following features are no longer available:

    • Client backup
    • Remote web access
