Please help! WHS won't stay running. Possible hardware failure.

Question

I hope someone can help. I have had a WHS running for a couple of years now on a decent, but old system (AMD, AGP, PATA, etc.). The other day I tried logging into my server via RDC and realized it was "down". I looked at the server and all of the lights were on, so I figured it needed a reboot. I rebooted and a few minutes later tried logging in again, but same thing. Shares were not showing up and RDC told me that the server did "not exist". I re-routed my 2nd monitor to the server, connected a k/m and logged in again. It logs into Windows and you can move around for a couple of minutes and then it freezes there. No BSOD, no blank screen, just the desktop, icons, taskbar and any open windows. But nothing works. I went ahead and rebooted again and went into the BIOS to see if it would freeze there as well. I let the BIOS alone for 45 minutes and I was able to get around within it with no issue. While in the BIOS, I did check the temps and the CPU temp IS high (about 180F). All fans in the PC are working. When I do get into Windows and open Explorer, the drives and data do show up. Also, Safe mode reacts the same way.
As an experiment tonight, I wanted to see if this was a Windows issue or not. I went ahead and put the install disk in and booted to it. It gets about 90% into the "Windows is copying files" routine (the very first thing it does) and just freezes. I think I have narrowed this down to a hardware issue. I have no problem getting new hardware but I do not want to lose my data.
I need help in replacing the hardware and not losing ANY of the data. Is that even possible? I'm guessing there is a way to do this, but I have yet to read a definitive "guide" on how it's done.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!!

You can replace the motherboard, CPU, memory, etc. (basically everything but the hard drives), then reconnect your server's drives to the new equipment (making sure that you connect the system drive so it will be the first drive presented by the BIOS) and try booting. Probably it will blue screen. If so, you should be able to use your installation media to reinstall/recover (wording will vary depending on the actual age of the media) your server with data intact. Read this FAQ carefully for a little more information about this process. You'll have to reactivate, which means you'll have to go through phone activation bacause your product key has already been used.
If you'd rather start from scratch but recover your data, see this FAQ instead.

Thanx Ken. I was thinking too much on this whole issue and your solution was perfect for my needs. I just pulled each disk, one by one, and copied the data from the "DE\Shares" folder. It took a while, but I think I retrieved all of my data. As far as the actual issue, at this point I don't care. I'm just going to piece together a new server and start from scratch!
Thanx again!
