XP Pro Activation Issue after Hardware upgrade RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

I have upgraded the hardware in my PC and cloned the hardisk on to a new 300Gb unit. When I first started I had issues because of the H/W changes but was able to use the repair function from the original CD to fix these issues.

BUT, now I get the following message "This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on."

As I am unable to logon I can't alter my Internet settings for the new hardware. Is their a solution other than a complete rebuild?

  • Hi Phil,

You question is Product Activation related, not Windows Genuine Advantage and so is outside my area of knowledge.

I do suggest, if possable, activating your computer using the 'Activate by Phone' method (see below) using the number found here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851/en-us. If this does not resolve your issue, I suggest posting your question in the Windows XP Forum (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx) or seeking tech support.

How to activate Windows XP by phone
To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:

    1. Click 'Start', point to 'All Programs', point to 'Accessories', point to 'System Tools', and then click 'Activate Windows'.
Or, click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area (aka system Tray).
    2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.
    3. Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box, and then click Next.
    4. When activation is completed and you receive the following message, click OK.
"You have successfully activated your copy of Windows".
