OCS 2007 in a Hyper-v Environment RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi ,
we're planning an installation for a small business customer .
He basically need OCS 2007 to make desktop sharing available between internal users and internet-based collaboration engineers.
He also wants to use OCS to make some video conference between users in their two company's sites.
The customer is a small business so we thought of using Hyper-v to run OCS server as well as exchange server in Virtual machine on the same Hyper-v host.

The configuration would be a Hyper-v server , with a lot of ram of course , running 3 VM ( Exchange server , OCS 2007 internal , OCS2007 for internet access )
Is that a supported configuration , would it work ?
Has anyone had experiences running OCS in Hyper-v Environment ?
    thanks
    Stefano

  • Hi Stefano,

We have had OCS 2007R2 running on Hyper-V in various locations with complete success. You will find that it is technically not supported however it is commonly done. Regarding your exchange 2007, just make sure you don't VM the UM role. Same applies with mediation if applicable on OCS.

  • Learn about the official statement of support for Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Virtualization here.

    Hope this helps. Thanks.

  • We are running virtualized at our 30-40 user organization.. we run hyperV.. on a dual cpu quad core x 2 box, with raid6, 8 drive array, plus another array coming to offload some vhds..

I'm about to roll out three more servers, one for edge and the other two for group chat.

  • I know it is not supported but we virtualized our Mediation server in our small 20+/- office.

Quality is as good as a normal telephone.  The thing is if quality is a problem it is easy to just deploy another Mediation server on a physical box.

Now you are likely to get some folks warning you away from this, but we are pleased with our deployment.  I've given you our experience and the warning.

  • OCS 2007 R2 is supported on virtualization... but OCS 2007 R1 is not supported in virtual setup.
