Had a ticket open with Msft in regards to this issue. Was provided an update today and most of you will NOT like it:
1. There are NO plans to release a revised version of Update Rollup #4 that corrects the installation issue.
2. There is NO workaround at the present time and NO workaround will be developed.
3. The issue will be resolved with Update Rollup #5 which is scheduled to be released in early July.

I got the same error when I used autoupdate.
When I installed this manually however the client update required me to point to the original client.msi.
We have a copy of the client install on a share on the CRM server and when I linked to this, the client update continued to install correctly.
You may have to install the clients manually and point each one to these files as I could not work out how to make the autoupdate automatically link to these additional files.Tuesday, May 26, 2009 3:56 PM -
I am experiencing the same error using AutoUpdate.
I have implemented this patch in the same manner as previous rollups, but have never seen this error before.
This seems to be a bug in this rollup. Will a V2 be released?
Have all of our clients manually install the rollup is not a feasible option with hundreds of users over multiple organizations!Tuesday, May 26, 2009 4:10 PM -
Post from Mike Brown on the CRM Team Blog:
- Installation package for CRM 4.0 not found (client.msi)
This is the same issue for both the normal and the autoupdate scenario. In UR4, the CRM Sustained Engineering Team made a performance fix that required adding a few additional files. Because the new files were added to the package the Windows Installer thinks it needs to install them regardless on if they need to be or not. The most common scenario for this happening is when trying to update the desktop client. The issue is resolved in our upcoming UR5 release and we are currently investigating workarounds. I will post a comment when the investigation is complete.
