Stock Internet Updates No Longer Possible With Sunset Deluxe? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I had the typical problem of LiveID sign in not working months ago. Well I just now realized that stock updates are no longer working when the LiveID password is disassociated from the account. Is this true?

Is there any way to get these updates again? If not I can't live with this. I will need a new program.

  • The updates are no longer available. See http://www.microsoft.com/money/sunset.mspx.

This https://sites.google.com/site/pocketsense/home/msmoneyfixp1 is an alternative source for the share price updates.

  • Reading DominicP link above about Sunset it seems that Microsoft is keeping the server to online quotes (and maybe also automatic downloads) alive and operating for those users who have had that service with their current version (ie) many earlier versions fo Money BEFORE Money Plus with activation code OR Money Sunset. It sounds like they are also allowing those with the Money Plus with activation code to continue to use online services until their two year period has expired. I do not know when they stopped selling the download version of Money Plus with the activation code, but it sounds like they will keep the online services going until two years from THAT time. This, even though they said they would cut-off all online services on January 31, 2011.

Anyone have any better information on this? Thanks. Steve

  • My guess would be that they simply have not bothered to turn off the relevant server. Maybe it provides other services for different applications. maybe the hardware is so old and crappy that they do not want to reuse it.

  • The scripting solutions sound too complicated, and I'm a programmer.

  • I am still using Money 2007 Duluxe, and it is still updating my mutual fund prices automatically each day when I open the program. I have also used hleofxquotes/ at http://code.google.com/p/hle-ofx-quotes, and found that program very easy to use to obtain updated prices for my mutual funds. Just download the program, enter your mutual fund or stock symbols, click UPDATE PRICES, and save the results in an ofx type file. Importing that ofx file into Money is a piece of cake.  With this type of support from the community of Money users, Money  should function as it used to for may years.

  • All the information is there (http://code.google.com/p/hle-ofx-quotes/):

. From top page: How do I use it: You will need java. Download the tool (a *.jar file). Double click on the download *.jar file to start.

. From the download page: Build_20110515_001  - current BETA version. Click to download the hleOfxQuotes-Build_20110515_001.jar   file. Double click to start.

. The moneyimportresponder.exe file is a utility to pop-down the import dialog box. The notes indicates it so:

    See: http://pocketsense.blogspot.com/2011/04/new-production-version-of-money-scripts.html?showComment=1305329004696#c6775971114926198565

For auto-click Microsoft Money Import dialog box.

I just compiled the codes and provide a copy here for those who does not have the compiler.

    Unzip to get MoneyImportResponder.exe

      . In short, download:

    file. Double-click to start.

. Again, the information is there. If something is not clear, log bug and it will be fixed. Comment like "Easy huh?", "Details please, this is like pulling teeth." come across wrongly.

  • I understand doubleclick .jar. However, it doesn't seem to work.

After entering symbols and clicking "import to MSMoney" a dialog flashes and it displays "last import on [date/time] but nothing inside money changes. Stock prices are still old ones.

Even saving to OFX doesn't do it.

And I still don't know what "pop-down import dialog box" means.

  • Aghh ... bug ... the latest feature: "pop-down import dialog box" is causing problem for first-time user. Normally, for the very first time, MM will prompt user to create an account to hold the imported price information. We often refer to that as 'creating the Dummy account'. With 'auto-click' enable (default), user does not have an option to create the Dummy account.

Try turn off that feature: 'Tools -> Import dialog auto-click -> uncheck the check mark'

    Now try to import again.

  • Interestingly confusing. Minus the bug, there seems to be another issue now of it wanting to import 0 positions from the "statement" causing  MM prompt me to make my positions reflect the statement...or not. One wrong click and I see this wiping out my quantities of stocks? I'm afraid to click "next" on this.

Also, on first run, it seems to want you to select each account at the beginning and only updates that one account? Or other?

"The positoins reported on the 5/25/2011 statement don't match those in your Money account.

Do you want Money to update your account to match the statement?"

    Security   Statement Quantity   Change
    xxx                     0                  Remove x shares
    yyy                     0                  Remove x shares

Ok also , since it asked me for only 1 account on initial run it is not updating the other account even though it is showing an import for it. And there seems to be no way to change this after initial run?

  • It seems as if you are mapping the imported data into an existing account. Best if you create a brand-new account for this purpose. Around here, that account often is refer to as the 'Dummy' account.

. When MM gets statement that has pricing for security for one account, MM will also update pricing for all other matching security in other accounts.

. So we recommend creating a Dummy account to hold the update pricing data. This account will have security with zero positions.

. How does MM know which account to use? The generated *.ofx has the FI's number (default 12345678), MM uses this number to find the account. If not existed, MM will offer to create new on or map to existing account.

If someone can explain this better, please help out.

  • I created a dummy account but now it won't select it , it automatically selects one of the others with positions.

How do you undo this without restoring a back up because i made changes to my file I don't want to lose.

    Thursday, May 26, 2011 2:31 PM
  • I believe this will do what you want (I have NOT try it myself): http://microsoftmoneyoffline.wordpress.com/fixing-ofx-financial-institution-file-association/

IMPORTANT:  Please try it on a copy of your Money file first. See: http://code.google.com/p/hle-ofx-quotes/wiki/Rolling_Back

Another option is to change the FI's id (to something new, non-default) in the generated *.ofx file. See section"Profile" in this release notes: http://code.google.com/p/hle-ofx-quotes/wiki/Build_20110226_001

  • where is the generated OFX? I don't see it in the same directory.
    Thursday, May 26, 2011 4:15 PM
  • Save OFX button on the right to save the generated *.ofx. You can examine it. Make change to it. Double-click on it on import directory into MM.
    Thursday, May 26, 2011 6:05 PM
  • I knew there was a save OFX but you said "generated" so I thought it was programatically derived automatically instead of user event driven.

I would rather not add multiple steps to this.

And I think the instructions should be on the main page , not on a esoterically named section half way down the page titled "First Timer".

  • Well after several days and 20 posts later, I cannot get this to work even after a dummy account is created. it seems to import but prices do not refelct changes in dummy account or accounts with positions.

In all my years of creating and testing software this experience has to be one of the worst.

  • @hleOfxQuotes: unlike a previous poster, I am very happy with your program.  I downloaded your latest (non-beta) version about a week ago but only tried it out yesterday.  I created an account called Downloaded Prices in a bank account called Dummy.  Your program worked flawlessly.  Thank you so much for your efforts.

Do you post here every time you produce an updated version?

  • Thanks. Yes, I do post an announcement here.

Alternatively, if you already has an RSS reader (such as Google Reader), you can subscribe to http://code.google.com/p/hle-ofx-quotes/downloads/list and your reader will let you know if there are new download available.
