Sync with... Live?

Question
-
First I was excited to hear that Vista would introduce Contacts, Mail, and Calendar. Outlook was always too much for a home user like me, but Outlook Express was never enough. I was even more excited to hear that there was a special new "Mobile Device Center" exclusive for Vista - surely now you could sync your device to these new Vista programs!
I was disappointed to find that I could not.
However, I see now that installing Windows Live Mobile allows you to sync contacts and e-mail between my device and Live. I also see that Windows Mail in Vista is being replaced by Windows Live Mail which also syncs with Live. I also notice that Live has Calendar and Task features, although I'm not sure if they sync with Vista or my mobile device yet (do they?).
So, if Live syncing is perfected, then I guess I can sync both my phone and desktop with Live and be ok. Shoot - it might even be preferable, as I won't need to connect my phone to my computer for syncing at all (unless I want to move photos or music, I guess).
The suggestion here, I guess, is to recognize that not all Windows Mobile users are business people who need a big Outlook solution. Many just want to be able to sync Contacts, Mail, Calendar, and Tasks with whichever free services are available (such as Live!).
Keep up the good work,
Teddy

you can sync your live calendar with wm6 through outlook if your live/hotmail account is set up as your default account and data file. I think you're out of luck on tasks for now

Okay, Microsoft, please listen (read) to the user's of your product.
The synching of Windows Live with my mobile phone (Palm Treo Pro WM 6.1) is great, however, support for synching Caledar and Tasks needs to be available WITHOUT having to purchase Outlook.
It would be great to make an appointment in Calendar, sync, have the appointment appear in my Live Calendar. It would be great to get (or have the option to get) a reminder on my phone as well as an alert via e-mail.
Without a viable Calendar synch option, the suite of Live products is incomplete.

Both are AMAZING programs. However, do you know if Live for Mobile is syncing all the Live features like Calendar and Tasks? I can't tell - I don't think it is.
My only problem with Windows Live Mobile is on the very cool front page widget, it always shows my status as "online," even when I logged in with my desktop hours ago, which obviously logs me out on the device.

I'm using Live Search daily for a variety of things I do as I travel.
The Sync that occurs just Syncs my contacts and of course, my Hotmail account.
I don't know if it has any relationship to Calendar or tasks

I am trying to sync the emails that I have at my desktop that are pulled in with Windows Live Mail with my windows mobile 6.0 phone. Those emails are hotmail.com emails and some are my work email address that I POP. Is there a way to sync those to my phone with Windows Live Mobile or any other solution?
Thanks.

WLM = Windows Live Mail
WM6 = Windows Mobile 6
LM = Live Mobile
HM = Hotmail
LS = Live Search
First of all, download LM for your WM6 phone (not to be confused with LS); this awesome program allows you to sync your HM with your phone and actually simulates "push" e-mail very well!
From what I understand, WM6 doesn't sync with WLM directly... yet. However, WLM and LM both sync with HM, so unless you move mail from HM into "storage folders" in WLM, you'll stay synced without ever connecting your device to your computer.
I assume that the only way to simulate POP mail syncing between the two is set up your WM6 device to check your POP mail but leave it on the server. That way you can download the mail later in WLM.
Personally, I switched away from POP accounts using Live Custom Domains. If you own your own domain, I highly recommend it! It's pretty spiffy that now my domain mail is basically integrated with HM, and HM is a MUCH better webmail interface than my host was providing. I guess I don't have POP access anymore, but that's fine by me for now since WLM and LM both sync with HM anyway, and I can always turn off Custom Domains and go back to my host if I want.
Hope that helps.

This would be a superb feature! I hope MS will soon implement it as this allows for a true mobile experience. When you're on the move, just find a PC with a web browser and have your office with you. WM6 experience is great but it sure is easier to enter new tasks or reply emails from a PC.
When I sit in front of my PC I don't use Outlook anymore, sure for sync and data input but than I only use my WM6 device to remind me of thing, inform about new mail etc. You sure know what I meanSunday, November 18, 2007 1:24 PM -

I think Tim answered it best:
Tim Bayer wrote: I have only been able to Sync Email and Contacts. I have not found a way to sync Live calendar and/or tasks. That, and of course my Live Messenger contacts.

Calendar and Tasks aren't full-featured Live services yet. I hope they will be, thanks to Google competition, but we'll see.
-
If they DO implement Calendar and Tasks into Live along with Mail and Contacts, then they've effectively removed the need for home users to ever, EVER purchase Outlook. So I'm not sure what they'll do. I'm in love with Windows Live Mail and Windows Live Mobile, so I'll never go back to Outlook anyway, but...

At the moment I don't even use my calendar and tasks in mobile because I don't have Outlook to sync with. Syncing with Live would be amazing - I already love that I really don't EVER have to sync with my PC; my mobile device syncs with Live and my desktop syncs with Live. "Live" is good, but if Calendar and Tasks are integrated, "Live" would be better!
Can anyone from MS out there confirm/deny that this feature is coming?

Yes
You can setup Live so your Hotmail will now be sent to the new Live account and they will notify your contacts that Live is your new email. I did that and it seems to work fine (so far)

How Can I sync WM6 calendar, tasks and notes with Live services? I recently
switched from Gmail to Live mail. I NEVER thought MS would do something to hotmail that will make me come back from yahoo/gmail. I started using live mail since I love the fact that the WM6 contacts and email sync smoothly with Live. When my WM6 device dies on me, all the contacts are wiped out, and I can easily sync it back to my device. But not having the calendar, tasks and notes sync is preventing me from using these Live services. In future, any service that doesn't sync will NOT be used by people (e.g. windows contacts and calendar!)
Someone made a nice app to sync my google cal with WM6 and it works just fine, so I'm still using google cal.
Cheers,
DD

Ya it would be nice if we could get some feedback on this. Not being able to sync live calendar is one of the few things making me keep on gmail and not switch to my live account. That and Microsoft hasn't figured out how to make ads that aren't completely obtrusive, they need to take a few hints from Google.Monday, December 17, 2007 12:42 AM

I just switched to Live and have them host my email now for my domain instead of me running my own exchange 2003 server.
So far so good. I installed the Outlook connector so I can do mail, contacts and calendar with Outlook 2007.
The only thing I can't do is get it to work with my phone. I have the Treo 700p and VersaMail that comes with it can do Exchange Active Sync. With that I could do mail, contacts and calenar with my exchange server doing Push.
Not that I switched to Live, I can't do any of these things on my phone. I really hope Microsofts creates a Provider like Exchange Active Sync to mobile phone makers so I can sync up my phone (or any non MSmobile phone) with Live.
Even current MS moble phones have limitaions on the calendar feature. Something I hope they resolve soon.
Now that the new version of the iPhone is coming out, I'd like to get that in the near future. The new iPhone supports sync with Exchange server. I can only hope iPhone can work with Live as well.

So true, they should extend the Windows Live Mobile application with a sync feature between Windows Live Calendar and Pocket Outlook Calendar.

I hope WinMo 7 is marketed as "Windows Mobile Live." Maybe they'd have to make two versions, because obviously the home market is exploding, and they'd have to keep an "exchange" version for business users. But with all the Live services on my device - I'd be in heaven.
I recently got married: I've set up a Live account for each of us as well as a "joint" account. The reason for this is so that we can keep all of our contacts and calendars and family/friend e-mail in one place. The reason for the separate accounts is for our personal newsletters and such, and so we can each login to messenger with our own ID.
So after I moved all of my contacts to the joint account, I deleted them from my personal account except for my mobile contacts (I don't want to try and keep the contacts synced on my personal account if I'm going to be updating the joint account contacts). Wasn't thinking, however, and now all of my contacts have disappeared from my cell phone. :( Sad.
Bottom line - "Windows Mobile Live" needs to have ways to check and sync multiple Live IDs easily - much like the Live websites work now with the dropdown that shows all of your linked IDs.Friday, January 2, 2009 5:19 PM -

hmmm... I've spent many o' hours messing with this. I'm not sure if I specifically tried this idea. I've got to remember to do what you say when I get to my home PC; because this will at least solve "half" of my problem, but unfortunately this still doesn't get rid of the bloaty-outlook-middle-man and then there are those pesky tasks, as you mention..

It's kinda bizarre that no one in MS would notice that some people would like to use the Live Calendar as the calendar on their PocketPC.... I just bought an iPaq for a lot $$$ and I still don't understand how they could have missed such an obvious need.
I'd do the Outlook tweek when I get home, but I shouldn't even need Outlook since I have the Windows Live mobile. It should be included as a feature, like the Hotmail connexion.Wednesday, May 6, 2009 4:13 PM -

2. Could you share the magic steps to follow to achieve such settings?

OK, I just have to post here because I have been following this thread (and a couple others like it) for at least a year.
"I AM MAD AS ____ AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!"
That's how I felt a couple days ago... What I want to stress here is that I've been a complete Apple basher my entire life - all my "Apple" friends know me as the "PC-Fanboy".
Well, my contract was up with AT&T and I went ahead and picked up an iPhone 3GS since I got an awesome discount off the 32GB version.
What I want to pass on is that within 30 minutes, I had Gmail import all my mail and contacts from Hotmail and then I set up my iPhone through Microsoft Exchange (YES!!! get that straight, through friggin MICROSOFT Exchange..... how ironic) and What a MIRACLE, the seas parted and I now have synced mail/contacts/calendar and who knows what else with out a single problem.
Oh, and the funny thing is that I got an email yesterday about the new "Microsoft Phone". I checked it out and it's the same Stupid OS that's already on my HTC Fuze that has sucked the life out of me for the last year. I only hope I can get a couple dollars for this piece of junk off eBay...
Seriously guys at Microsoft, LISTEN TO YOUR ____ CUSTOMERS! For everyone else, take my advice, just get an iPhone, and I promise that you'll be happier.Saturday, October 10, 2009 3:31 PM -

Yes, I know this essentially hijacks this thread, but apparently nobody from Microsoft ever reads this thread anyway...
I hope you accept that I have spent countless hours over the past year and a half researching this issue. THERE IS NO WAY TO SYNC WINDOWS LIVE CALENDAR WITH ANY SMARTPHONE. Period. Regardless of smartphone operating system (Windows Mobile, Blackberry, iPhone, etc.). End of story, quit wasting your time trying to do so.
Of course, you can use the BS workaround through Outlook to sync with Windows Mobile, but that doesn't count because it is complete lunacy to expect 99.9% (my personal estimate) of the user base to accept as a solution, which isn't really a solution anyway because it doesn't really work (in my opinion). And, YES, this has not changed an iota since the exactly 744 days (over 2 years) since this original thread was started.
When you realize this and move on, I promise you with every ounce of my soul that you will be a happier person, because at least I am. I still have not had a single problem with having my iPhone synced to a Gmail account (mail, contacts, calendar). And, as an aside, you can search for details elsewhere, but you can now check Hotmail through POP, therefore you can have your hotmail filtered into your Gmail account.Friday, November 6, 2009 2:14 AM -
Hmmm, for the last 2 years I WAS receiving my calendar updates through windows live (along with email and contacts). I spoke with MSN who stated they changed protocols on 31Aug09 and that may have affected some users like myself. So I this issue started with me recently.
This may explain why I can no longer receive it on my pocket pc. However, I ALSO have the iphone, and I cannot sync with my laptop via iTunes AND I cannot pull from anywhere. I am able to receive emails only but not from a laptop sync. How were you able to download your calendar, contacts, and email via iPhone? As you know MSN is not an option on iPhone. I have to use "Other" when setting up email.Friday, November 6, 2009 3:13 PM -
I think that Microsoft must issue an update to synchronize mobile calendar (but also task) with live calendar OTA (over the air), as soon as possible!
Google already offers this features for some time.............Wednesday, November 11, 2009 8:07 AM -
Guys, don't be so naive.
Microsoft has all the software and the knowledge to make a free server with which you can exchange everything with everything.
But they will not make that, because they make money on selling MS EXchange Server software to companies.
If Microsoft would provide a free exchange service, they would undermine their own source of income.
They know exactly what people want, but they do only what is commercially interesting for Microsoft.Wednesday, December 30, 2009 3:20 PM -
Serioisly, if any company would like to use an internet e-mail provider to avoid MS Exchange Server, they could simply use Googlemail!
I echo the others' view. Start offering proper synchronization (including calendar and mail folders other than Inbox). All your competitors do! ... and I've got to say, I am really, really close to switching from my hotmail plus (yes, I am a paying customer!!!) account to googlemail.Friday, January 8, 2010 2:55 PM -
Well Everyone, I'm very happy that all of you have contributed to this thread. I've been trying to figure out how I was going to salvage my beloved hotmail.com account for days now. I was even insistent that I learn all of the Windows Live features. Especially since my fiance and I have hotmail.com accounts and merged calendars. We also have extensive contact lists. We plan about every minute of our lives through Windows Live Calendar. We really love the Windows Live Calendar, we just thought it would be as simple as upgrading our phones and synchronzing with our computer. My ancient Nokia cell phone has Nokia PC Suite and can sync with Windows Contacts (Vista), but not with Windows Live Contacts. I'm tired of exporting my Windows Live contacts (from the web) into an excel file, importing them into windows contacts (vista), then synchronizing them with my ancient Nokia Phone. But as it turns out, my ancient Nokia phone and it's 4-year old PC Suite are just as advanced as Microsoft is going to get. So what did I do? GOOGLE! I made about four keystrokes and a mouse click and all of my hotmail contacts were transfered into google contacts. Now I'm going to start using their calendar and email, write my friends, and bid hotmail farewell. The only computer I ever had that didn't crash and didn't have one compatibility or usability issue was a Mac. That's right, I'm saying it, a Macintosh G3. I don't care how many people love their precious PC, Apple seems to have every solution wrapped up in a neat little box. Maybe I'll really go off the deep end and buy that iPhone next year and sync with GMail. Either that or I'll use a land line phone and the paper calendar I picked up at the local church. Thanks for reading and thanks for helping.Friday, January 15, 2010 10:56 AM

It slays me to hear someone say, "wait for technology to get better." We are talking about basic technology that is at least 10 years old.
I haven't used a Windows Mobile phone since November (see my post above), but still follow these threads and as far as I can tell, there is still no solution. I find nothing regarding WinMo 7 either.
But I will say, after 3 months of using an iPhone with Google through MS Exchange (the irony kills me... again, see my post above), I still have absolutely no problems whatsoever and I am as happy as a clam.
Oh, and I think the above is a perfect explanation for the following data: http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/21774.cfmFriday, February 19, 2010 2:15 PM -
You can vote that this post is helpful. But I would say this post is hopeless. These guys in Microsoft have done nothing for the past 2 years to solve the problem. Wow. I knew about Microsoft My phone but I never installed it because I thought it couldn't sync calendar. I saw this page http://sn1-p2.myphone.microsoft.com/mkweb/Start.po?mkt=en-US but I didn't say that the app could sync calendar. Now, I was really excited when I found out that I could do that. But I wan't lucky anyway - I installed Microsoft My Phone, and I set it to sync my tasks and calendar. The app did say that it synchronized everything. However, I found my calendar entries neither on Live.com nor in Windows Live Mail client. I guess it needs sometime to get my data available online. :-) Anyway, I already found two ways to sync calendar, contacts and task with my pc - using SyncExpress, which doesn't work with Russian texts in calendar. And another way is to sync stuff through Bluetooth, which doesn't work if you don't have Bluetooth. Both solutions are not good since they don't sync my data with Windows Live service. It seems the technology is ...
Wow. Ok. I think I got it. Microsoft always misleads you with variety of software they offer. I have thought that Microsoft My Phone syncs my calendar with Windows Live Calendar, but it doesn't. I have to go to Microsoft My Phone site and there I can access my calendar and text messages and everything. Too bad, I have to run two apps to sync my calendar with internet and with my pc.
That's better than nothing. Can I sync Microsoft My Phone with Windows Live?
Monday, March 22, 2010 6:52 AM -
No, Microsoft My Phone syncs with your phone only not Windows Live. But I figured if my hotmail emails are sync'd I now only have to update the My phone calendar and then it will sync and I will be finally organized with only one extra step of which I do not mind as I could mentally verify my calendar realtime.Monday, March 22, 2010 1:53 PM

You are correct. Either it works or don't. That is not a resolution, but merely a "Possible" solution. Why should one do this... then that... then this... then that... for resolution especially if you are paying for service.

"Actually, Windows Live is free - you don't have to pay for it."
You are correct, however, same problem exist with MSN (which i do pay for). I previously used MSN then switch to Live to do what i need to do. I've had MSN for 10 years. Now neither does what I need it to do. I have mogul, moment, AND Iphone.

So, just to be clear, there is NO way to have the account that is set up on a Windows mobile phone sync that particular accounts Windows Live Calendar? I use My phone, which is set up under the same Windows Live account to sync the calendar, but it only shows up on the My Phone website calendar and not the Windows Live Hotmail Calendar.
Can someone verify this? Thanks!
