BackUp to a second INTERNAL harddrive RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am using 2.0 beta and want to backup to a second internal hard drive on a desktop machine.  The options that I am given only looks like it allows the CD/DVD or a network or external drive.  I am using 1.6 on a laptop with a docking station that has a second HD and it will allow me to use the D: drive as a backup source.  But, 2.0 on this desktop won't allow the D: drive to be used.  Is this correct?  I would really like to use the second internal HD for a backup.  That way I don't have to have an external drive connected when I am not in the office.  Good way to get it stolen at night, etc.

    Thanks for any help.... RCH

  • You may want to have a look at this FAQ post by the backup team - http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1924436&SiteID=2

You can configure your second internal drive as a Centralized backup Share and you can then backup to it.

  • Stephen, I've subscribed to Windows Live One Care since April 2006.  For more than a year I've waited patiently for the ability to back up to an internal hard drive.  I understand that Release 2.0 will enable that feature provided the "local" backup drive is either a network shared "document" or network shared drive.  Today I tried to verify that feature in 2.0 by un-installing version 1.6 and installing Beta 2.0.  Unfortuneately, Beta 2.0 is apparantly no longer available for download.  Since Microsoft has been slow with the Release 2.0 (last February a Microsoft customer help advisor advised the internal hard drive back-up feature would be added spring 2007) is there another interim solution?  Thanks.

The 2.0 beta is still available here:

Answer the short "survey" and you will be presented with a download link for the installer.

I'm sorry that support told you Spring of 2007, as that was quite obviously bad information.

If you are able to wait, and go back to 1.6, the 2.0 release is just around the corner. It is expected this month and an announcement is likely to appear here soon if they are on target.

  • Steve, thanks for the response.  After filling in my e-mail address and country, the above url goes to the download site for 1.6.  I tried this before posting to this forum.  I guess I'll have to wait until December 1 for the 2.0 release.  Thanks.

  • Very strange, Robert. I checked the download before I posted my last reply and it was indeed working for me and took me to the download for v2.

    What country are you in?

You might not have to wait too much longer for the final release, at least.

  • I have discovered a way to enable an internal hard drive as a OneCare backup device, without requiring registering the PC as a Hub PC.  This worked in Windows Vista Home Premium [YRMV in other OS].

First, I clicked Start / Network / Network and Sharing Center -- then I turned ON File Sharing and Public Folder Sharing, and I turned OFF Password Protected Sharing.  (If you use a password on your Windows logon, then I would suggest leaving this turned ON.)

Second, I clicked Start / Network -- then I clicked on the icon for my pc (KIRK-PC, in my case).

Third, I right-clicked the icon for my second (internal) hard drive (e, in my case), and clicked Map Network Drive, then I left the option set to Z for the new drive letter, and clicked FINISH (if you have Password Protected Sharing turned ON, this is where it would ask you for the password, but since mine was off, it just went on and) -- a new window opened showing (\\KIRK-PC\E) (ZSmile -- and I was ready.

Fourth, I entered Z: for the network location in the OneCare backup settings, and it happily recognized this as a "networked drive".  I then ran backup, and it worked just fine.

    You're welcome.

  • I have Windows Live OneCare Version 2.5 and I am still unable to use my second, internal hard drive for backups.  I like to do frequent backups (two or three times a week) and burning CD's or DVD's is simply impractical.  Having an external hard drive seems a waste when I already have a second, internal drive that I installed only for the purpose of backup.   I love Windows Live OneCare more than any other AntiVirus and security program I have ever used. However, it sure would be nice if I could use my second hard drive for backups.

  • You *can* use an internal drive for backup. It is technically unsupported and only a workaround, but it can be done.

It requires the PC to be a Hub PC in your OneCare Circle and that you configure Centralized Backup to back up to a Network Share created on that PC.
