Can't find 3.5 external USB harddrive RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I have an old Futura 3.5 enclosure on an old harddrive that I got a couple years ago. It has always been less than user-friendly. I admit that I am not a computer geek, but with a little trial and error I can usually  get what I needed accomplished.

Now I have a new computer that runs Vista. I want to get all the stuff off the external harddrive on to the new computer.

I used to be able to find it on WinXP via: Start : My Computer. It would show up along with my C drive and whatever else I had. Sometimes I have to refresh the window, say a couple prayers, and make a cup of tea before it would show up, but it would usually get around to being nice to me eventually.

Now it does not show. I tried searching around the device manager and other locations in the control panel. Alas, I can't find it.

I have turned on the power to the Xternal harddrive, plugged it in via USB. When I do I get a handy little icon on lower right side of computer that allows me to safely remove hardware. When I click on the icon it tells me that it is a USB mass storage device.

I have tried running the driver CD that came with it. But it is full of incomprehensible files and folders. I picked one, which ran some kind of setup. It told me that it would only work on WinXP service pack 1.

There are indications that windows has the drive already installed anyway.

So how to I get a look at the stuff on this thing!

You're off topic for this forum, which is dedicated to Windows Live OneCare.

Your question may be better posed to another forum:

However, if the drive is not being recognized, I believe that you may have a hardware problem with the drive. If it is not being recognized and visible in Windows Explorer, but the drive is detected at attach, that means that the drive does not appear to Windows to have any data on it and it would require formatting before use.
