D:\data\shares data - is this just the tombstones? Can I ignore? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm doing a completely new install and starting from scratch.

I understand I need to get ALL data off of the PRIMARY drive before I do this (DATA partition that is) - since it will be reformatted - and thought that meant ONLY data from the d:\DE\shares\ folder....but I'm scratching my head looking at the d:\shares\ folder.  I've read that only the tombstones are saved there - and that I should see only 4kb files - but all the file sizes appear to be the actual original file sizes - but I can't open any of the files - so am I safe to assume that I can safely IGNORE the D:\shares\ folder - and focus on the D:\DE\Shares\ folder only for the content I need to move off?

    Thanks!

  • That's correct; D:\Shares\etc. is only tombstones.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Thanks Ken.  unrelated question: have you played around with setting up a Windows 8 Home Server by chance?  Sounds like it's quite possible...
