  • Question

  • Looking for a good MS class that covers all the new features of going from Windows 2003 to 2008.  Looking at Server Features, Networking and AD changes.  Everyone on the team is proficient with 2003, we just want to learn the new features and changes of 2008.

If anyone has a suggestion or any experience with such a course please let me know

  • Hi Shaun.

There are a whole bunch of courses designed for server 2008 but for active directory you might want to try MS course 6425:

    http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/syllabi/6425afinal.mspx

Networking would be MS Course 6421

For the MS certification transition paths from 2003 to 2008, please look here:

  • I've been looking at doing the MCTS Exam for Windows 2008 Server.  Do I have to take Exam's 70-640 and 70-642 before I take Exam 70-646?  Seems a bit backwards.  I would figure you learn Server Administration before going into Networking and AD considering both exams say you should have Server 2008 basic knowledge.

  • Which MCTS exam? Each of the exams you have mentioned is a MCTS qualification in its own right.

MCTS exams basically show that you have a grasp of a specific aspect of a technology, for example Active Directory (70-640)

The Server Administrator exam is an MCITP - Microsoft Certified IT Professional. In order to gain one of these qualifications, you must prove that you are adept at several different aspects of the technology, in this case Server 2008. In order to be a Server Administrator, you should (theoretically at least - real life is not always the same) be an expert in all of the different roles and technologies you could possibly come across and this is why you get the MCTS qualifications enroute to getting the MCITP.

    Does this help?

  • I do understand each of those exams are MCTS components.  I want to take Exam 70-646 after reading the Windows Server 2008 Administration (can't remember if that's the right name of the book).  If you see this link.
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/6/c/86c9cad5-90e6-40a8-8db2-5f6c3c40dd0c/MCITP_ServerAdmin_exam_roadmap.pdf

It shows the two exams prior I was talking about and then 70-646 exam at the top.  Can I take that exam first and then take the other two and then get the certificate.  Or do I have to take 70-642 and 70-640 first before taking 70-646.

It makes more sense to me to study Server first before studying the other technologies.  Don't get me wrong I plan on studying those just right now for me, and in my roll it would be more advantageous to study this book first since we have 2008 implementations out there.  I just don't want to read this book and find out I cannot take the exam only to have to read another book and take the other exams.

    Thanks
