Request work around for: Can RRS feed

  • Question

  • Greetings:

Have been using synctoy 1.4 for a long time - very handy.  Use it between 2-3 pcs plus additional thumb drives.  The instructions say to sync all on 1.4 before upgrade.  Would be happy to, but one of the major pc's lost it's synctoy 1.4.  Can't reinstall synctoy 1.4  as only have .msi file from earlier install.  Please advise on the best work around in this situation.

    1) Is synctoy 1.4 available someplace to complete a full sync before the upgrade?

    2) If synctoy 1.4 is not available, would the following approach work safely?

Unistinall Synctoy 1.4  (don't know if it will remove the metadata files)
Remove any SyncToy metadata files i can find on all pcs and thumb drives including
              - SyncToyData folder
              - any SyncToyDirectoryID.txt files
              - any other files or folders?
        Reboot
        Install Synctoy 2
Establish folder pairs and sync  as if a completely new install

    3) Is there another alternative?

    Thank you for your help.

  • Hi -

In case you are not sure about what metadata to remove - go ahead and install SyncToy 2.0 and open it up for the first time. If your metadata is still lying around - chances are that the old folder pairs will come up. Use SyncToy 2.0 and DELETE these folder pairs and that should take care of deleting all the old metadata. Recreate them afresh and then sync the folders.

  • Hi -

You say you have lost SyncToy 1.4 so I am unsure as to how you are going to uninstall SyncToy 1.4. If any of the PC's have SyncToy 1.4 just bring upto date all the folder pairs that they have been using. The just upgrade to 2.0. Assuming that one of the PC's lost its SyncToy 1.4 ( possibly by reimaging) - I am guessing that it probably has no folder pair information stored anywhere. Just install SyncToy 2.0 on that PC and do an initial sync with all the folder pairs that you are recreating on that box.

    Thanks

  • Thank you for your help.  Yes - you are correct - don't have synctoy 1.4 - it was uninstalled however meta data remained.

So it sounds like clearing out all old metadata would make it a fresh start with synctoy2.  That seems doable.
    Thank you

  • hi, i have a similar problem:

i had installed synctoy on my old laptop and i am working in a windows domain environment (ads).

a few weeks ago i got a new laptop and used the old profile through the domain. now there is some data of synctoy left, that doesn't allow me to install synctoy2 because some Setup.msi is missing -- i guess for uninstalling the synctoy 1.4

    any help?

  • i found a solution for that:

executed regedit and searched for all entries containing "synctoy" and deleted them.

now it installed without any problems!
