Genuine Avvantage purchased key will not update RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased a PC with preinstalled Windows XP MCE professional. It failed Validatation and I was offered to purchase the Genuine advantage key which I did so and recieved new key via Email and the CD is in the post. When I tried to update with the new key it constantly says Invalid key entered. I have followed the update proccedure correctly to no evail. I really dont want to install fresh when my CD arrives in a few days as I spent many hours prepping and installing software. Is it because the installed version is MCE edition and I presume I was sold Windows XP professional only? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. Tony

  • Hello tshine67,

Your installation of XP Media Center Edition is an installation done with the Dell OS Reinstallation CDs for Media Center.  The product key being used, *****-*****-RVF66-GP7VM-8CFT3, is the Dell SLP deployment product key for their OEM installaltions of MCE.

The problem is that the installation is not activated.  This situation is however understandable, since it appears that you have tried to install Dell's MCE on a non-Dell computer.  This is the reason why the installation will not activate.  This is expected behavior and is an instance of SLP product activation preventing casual piracy of the OEM license for MCE.

If you ordered a WGA Kit for XP Pro, the product key you were emailed will work ONLY for XP Pro, and only with a full retail CD, which is what you will be getting in the mail shortly.
