  • I did update the BIOS but not lately... maybe 5-6 months ago? Well, I just went to Acer's website and updated the BIOS from 1.28 to 1.29. After the update, I reentered my product key from the sticker and it passed activation. I hope it'll stay that way. Now I don't know how to change my desktop background to what it was before. I only have Windows 7 Starter and the background is now plain black since the "Windows is not genuine..." error. Ah well, not that big of a deal. Thanks.

    Just to confirm, you changed to the Product key listed on the sticker on the PC and your issue is resolved, is that correct?

    Have you updated the BIOS on that machine lately?
    If so, then you updated to the wrong version - the one you have is valid only for Vista, not Win 7. You would therefore need to update to a Win7-compliant BIOS.
    If not, then you should change the Product Key in use to the one on your COA sticker (either on the case, or inside the battery compartment), and then activate - probably by telephone.

    The Windows Starter edition has only one option for the background, IIRC - are you saying that it hasn't flipped back to that?
    I suggest that you post that problem in the Win7 Repair forum - it's not one that I claim to know anything about.
    You should post another MGADiag report here just to make sure that all is now well.

  • Yes, I just entered the product key on the sticker affixed to the netbook. I didn't pay attention to what the key was before - I imagine it would be the same as I never had a Windows genuine/activation problem since I purchased this unit. A copy of a current MGADiag report is shown below:

    Yes, I just entered the product key on the sticker affixed to the netbook. I didn't pay attention to what the key was before - I imagine it would be the same as I never had a Windows genuine/activation problem since I purchased this unit. A copy of a current MGADiag report is shown below:

    Your report is still showing a couple of problems :(
    I would suggest going to the Validation site, and updating your validation - it may clear the problem, or give us some more data to work with.

    That's looking better :)
    Do you still have problems with the background, or has that reverted back to normal now?

  • My desktop background is just black now or maybe that's the default for no background? Before it was some generic image from Acer. It's alright, I'm fine with no background.

    Ah - there is a hack to change the background in starter, if you decide you have a better idea than black, I suggest that you post in the Win7 Repair forum, where you may at least get told how to reset it back to the Acer one (I dread to think how bad that is - it was less than 5 minutes after installing my Aspire 8930 that I changed the background to something a little less garish :) )

    I just found this in one of the answers forums - try it and see, if you want your Acer background back - I have no Idea whether it works.
    <quote>
    To restore the original background in Windows 7 Starter edition, just change the display to the Windows Classic Scheme, apply the settings, then switch back to the Windows Basic Scheme and apply the settings again. Your original background will be restored. You can reach this setting in the control panel, select "Make computer easier to read", then select "Choose a high contrast scheme"
