DFS-R/Backups Between WHS and SBS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello

I have a client requesting a unique backup scenario.  We are installing an SBS 2008 domain in his office and he wants offsite backups.  In the next breath he requested Home Server for his home.  An idea of backing the SBS server data to the WHS and vice versa was discussed.  I can create a VPN and have the bandwidth.  Does anyone know if WHS will support DFS-R?  I am sure there are a variety of options to acheive this but I would like to maintain an exact duplicate of his office data files on the home server and his home media on his SBS server.  I am new to home server but the clients has media center enabled TV's and uses Mac's and PC's in his home and wants access to the shared media.  I would appreciate your input on this concept?  Thanks in advance for your help

  • DFSR is, I believe, available in Windows Server 2003, which is the base operating system for Windows Home Server. However, the way Drive Extender uses the drives in the server leads me to believe that it will be unable to successfully replicate changes from/to the server shares. If you decide to try it, make absolutely certain you don't do so for the first time in a production environment. You will need to spend significant time testing various potential scenarios to make sure that Windows Home Server will be able to funciton properly, and without corrupting all of your client's data.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Thanks Ken...as a newbie to Home Server, I appreciate the input.  I guess I should suck it up and get a second 2008 server on the domain for the home and use DFS-R to the office and simply dump the WHS backups to it on regular intervals.  Any other slick backup ideas for WHS I may have over looked?  Thanks everyone.
