Sorry, there's no way to do this from blog clients like Windows Live Writer. You need to do it from your blog's web admin.Wednesday, June 18, 2008 5:11 AMModerator

Why? it seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to want to do.Saturday, June 21, 2008 11:22 PM

Most likely it will be because the blog providers offer no way for third party clients (like Live Writer) to actually perform that task.

ok, but spaces.live.com does have a way, and that's what I use. So - since writer knows that I'm talking to a spaces account, it could have that functionality.Tuesday, June 24, 2008 9:21 PM

Good point, but the trick is that there is not 1-1 parity with features that you can do through <insert blog provider name here> and the methods/APIs they expose to 3rd party applications to perform the same task. So in the case of Spaces, you're correct that you can delete a category and (believe it or not) there is no way for Writer to tell Spaces to delete a category (even though there is a way for Writer to tell Spaces to add one).
You highlight a good inconsistency. Hopefully it's one we can address in a future release.
Thanks again for your feedback.

The question is how to delete categories from WRITER. Deleting them from the blog's admin (such as Spaces) deletes it from the blog's admin, but it does **NOT** remove it from Writers list. So the question remains:I'd like to change my list of categories, but there's only an add button. How do I delete some?

To delete them from WLW after they have been removed from spaced you click to get the usual popup menu with categories and on it you hit the green circular arrows. They reload the categories again from the server.

Hitting the refresh button works--but we should also pick up the changes automatically the next time you create/open a post (assuming you're online, of course).Wednesday, November 12, 2008 3:11 AMModerator

I think the perceived problem here is that since Writer can add a category and the blogging platform in question will accept this addition (via it's API?), by the same token, Writer should be able to use the same path to delete a category as well. I realize that it's not the same thing in practice but why the function(s) are perceived this way.
For example, WordPress offers direct support for Writer via it's "wlwmanifest.xml" file and WP 2.7 includes a comments API which Writer (in the future) could possibly take advantage of for managing comments. Also, by utilizing "wlwmanifest.xml", Writer might eventually form a two-way path for functions like deleting categories, listing existing tags, etc. But these type of possibilities are with a blogging platform that actually directly supports Writer. AFAIK WordPress is the only blogging/CMS platform that currently offers this kind of direct support.
But you still can't delete a category from a WordPress blog either. (I know, no help but I had to have some excuse for posting here for the first time since you folks moved the forum. Hi, Joe.) :DThursday, November 13, 2008 5:07 PM
