Simple mySQL question

Question
-
I have a huge collection of icons that I'm trying to filter to select only Windows 16-Color. These are variously .ICO, .PNG and .BMP file types. My question is: Do graphics/icon files have to be scanned/indexed before mySQL can filter them, or is the data for the file's color depth -- in my case, standard Windows 16-color -- contained in the the file properties as "raw" information, searchable without generating thumbnails first?
If I can search this data raw, how would I search on the multiple resolution/color depth versions typically packed in one .ICO file? Thanks.
