Activate Windows XP

  I would like to know how to activate Windows XP on my computer.  I called Microsoft and they told me that they validated the product key (OEM) and the reason that it isn't working is because of technical issues.  When I try to put in the Product Key, it says the Key is unauthorized.  Can someone please tell me the steps to fixing this?  I am unable to access any of my files or programs such as Skype and certain online links won't work such as the one from my email to my online classes.  Your help will be much appreciated.  Thanks.
