  • I am 6 months into my new job as a Intranet network technician. I have 2 years school and 6 months on hands by fire exp at work. I am needing to take 70-642 or something with active directory certification. I read the most of the classes that I want are or will no longer be available as of July 31, 2013. not sure I can finish a lot by then but what should I do. I want to take MCITP but i cant finish by then. IS there anything I am missing? just keep in mind that I want to take 70-642 or something equivalent.

  • If your employer is currently using Server 2008, then studying for and passing 70-640 would give you the needed Active Directory training, along with the MCTS designation for that course.

That said, since both the MCITP Server 2008 designations (Server Administrator and Enterprise Administrator) are being retired next year, the only alternative would be to begin working on MCSA - Server 2012 certification.

  • Hi Charles,

Your advice was good, but there was one point in need of clarification.

Yes. The MCITP designation is being retired on July 31, 2013. However, the only alternative is not to begin working on Server 2012 certification.

The exams that comprise MCITP: Server Administrator on Windows Server 2008 (70-640, 70-642, 70-646) are not being retired. Instead, a name change is taking place, and MCITP: Server Administrator on Windows Server 2008 will simply become MCSA: Windows Server 2008 after July 31, 2013.

On Microsoft's MCITP Certifications web page you will find the following:

MCITP: Server Administrator on Windows Server 2008. This certification will no longer be available to earn as of July 31, 2013. Candidates who pass Exams 70-640, 70-642, and 70-646 will continue to earn the MCSA: Windows Server 2008 certification after the MCITP: Server Administrator on Windows Server 2008 certification is no longer available.

I hope you find this information useful.
