Question About Using 2 LAN Cards RRS feed

  • Question

  • My WHS machine (ASUS Rampage Formula) has two high speed ethernet cards built into the mobo.  If I use both of them, tied into my one linksys WRT600N router, will I get better performance while streaming video?  My concern is this -- if 2 or 3 movies are streaming to different computers would there be delays or any other issues and, if wired with 2 router ports, would the system perform better?

  • Hi Mike,
multiple LAN adapters are not supported by Windows Home Server.
The function you need would be Teaming, which is usually only provided for hardware, which is designed for servers and gets appropriate drivers. And here again the difference, which allows either load sharing or a standby teaming, so that adapter 2 is ready to kick in, if adapter 1 fails.
Also the switch on the other end must be able to handle a teamed virtual NIC properly - I am not sure, if the average home router would do this.
Using separate IP addresses will cause the usual headache with multihomed systems.
    Best greetings from Germany
