  • Question

  • Since I have my computer set to get automatic updates, this morning it tried to update KB905474. It failed although it was actually already installed 5/2/06. I also validated my software and that worked out. Do I just ignore it? How do I stop from my computer trying to download it again? Why did microsoft issue it again? This is very frustrating.

    Please Help!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • If you are referring to update 905474, then download and install directly: http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/windowsxp-kb905474-enu-x86_4bafa8793e8cdcaf4ba4ffc494df32d496154544.exe

Then re-boot Windows. Does this solve your problem?

I have already downloaded and run that installer.  Not only does that not fix the problem, "Genuine Advantage Notification" still shows up on my list of required installs, and FAILS TO INSTALL.

There are almost forty other updates, most of them SECURITY UPDATES, that I cannot install because of this.

Oddly enough, after I'd downloaded and installed from the previous link, and then rebooted twice, it worked. I wish I could explain why. I'm sure it's something related to what was going on with my machine rather than a procedure that could be generally applied. Symantec Anti-Virus might've had its clean-on-reboot module going, for instance. I was in the "mopping up" stages of cleaning up after a malware infection and trying to get all of the latest security updates to keep that from happening again. Just one more reason why having Automatic Update screwed by the "Genuine Advantage" "tool" was so frustrating.

So, problem solved. I just wish I could offer more insight as to how. I can only assume that working from your latest link, instead, might solve the problem quicker for others.

As for the other suggestion about using "Express" mode instead of "Custom," well ... that was actually the first thing I'd tried. I hate to be snarky in a forum like this, but please put down the 3-ring binder and explain to me how that would have been better. How, besides removing the ability to pick and choose what you're installing, is that different? What is the advantage? Is there any virtue to that course of action besides possibly not having been tried?
