Problems with remote desktop showing offline RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Ok i really don't get what is going on with this remote desktop. i've started using live mesh to remote into my media center pc, when i first installed live mesh it said that the machine was online but couldnt connect, then after hours off research i gave up to find that it fixed itself over night. so i was using Remote desktop today and had to restart the machine, now even though live mesh is running on the media center machine and says that its online when i try to connect from my main machine it says that its offline. I've checked to see if the live mesh remote desktop service is running and it is. any ideas?

  • Is the media center machine that you wish to connect to actually logged into Live Mesh or is it waiting at the login prompt? Are you seeing the same status for the remote machine via the Live Desktop as you see in the Live Mesh notifier/client?

  • Yes it logged into the desktop software automatically. as for the status, on the media center pc I don't remember it having an exclamation mark but it defiantly shows unable to connect in the live desktop web site.

BTW i'm running Win 7 64bit on all machines. And from what i have seen if i leave my machine on for long enough the status seems to update and i am able to connect, usually this is several hours though.

  • Thanks for the update, though it sure seems strange that you are intermittently able to connect. I would expect that a blocking issue such as a firewall, router, or ISP block would not change after a period of time. I wonder if there's some sort of intermittent server communications issue affecting your account...

  • yeah i agree its very stange, how often does live mesh notify the live mesh servers of a status change? are there any logs that help show whats going on? i saw a script that collects the logs but i don't know where to look

    I did a little test

    1. Connected to my media center pc, the status of the media center box was updated strait away to the exclamation mark (from the pc i am remoting from)
    2. Disconnected the remote desktop connection

the status fails to update. this can take sever hours until it changes back to an option where i can connect back to the machine

  • I don't know the answer to your question about the timing of status updates, but in my experience it is typically within few minutes. However, I've also expereinced what you describe with the remote desktop not being availabl on rare occasion when I know that the remote machine is in fact available on my local LAN. I've seen it take quite a while to update the status and other times it needed a reboot or log out/log in on the remote or local machine (Live Mesh client) to get the status updated.
It sure seems like a server issue to me.
