Validation and update errors (win7) RRS feed

  • Question

  • My computer has recently started throwing up the "not genuine windows" popup (despite having no problems for years) and I can't figure out how to fix it.  It also has problems installing updates -- it says there are 14 updates to install but then hangs for a few minutes at 0% downloaded before trying to install "1 of 3" and then giving errors 8E5E03FA and 800B0100.  I ran the Windows Update troubleshooter which claimed to be successful but still had the same problems.  Ran the  System Update Readiness Tool, ditto.  Ran both multiple times with no change.  I am at a loss for what to do (except backing everything up and reinstalling the OS, which would be a pain.  Help?

  • I managed to find a copy of the necessary file - but we still need a CheckSUR report.

    I've uploaded a file - miraa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive

    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...

Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract

    This should create a folder
C:\miraa Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'

    Pick that

You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt

    At the prompt type

    DIR C:\miraa

hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try

    DIR D:\miraa

    or

    DIR E:\miraa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

    XCOPY <drive>:\miraa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type

    EXIT

and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt

then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your SkyDrive Public folder, and post a new link

Also run a new MGADiag report, and post the result.

  • The file replacements worked that time :)

Now for the second batch - slightly different method this time....

    I've uploaded a file - mirab.zip - to my SkyDrive at  Noel's SkyDrive

    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…

Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder  mirab in the same place.

Open this folder - there should be two folders inside it (Manifests, and Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

And the content of the manifests folder (.manifest files) into this folder:

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and run a new MGADiag report

There's one file that I can't source, because it's part of a superceded patch - hopefully it won't get in the way

  • Your log now shows the following errors...

    2013-02-10 17:25:29, Info                  CBS    Failed to resolve execution chain. [HRESULT = 0x8e5e03fa - JET_errReadVerifyFailure]

This may be related to one of the system databases - please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands...

    net stop cryptsvc
    ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2\edb.log *.tst
    net start cryptsvc

exit the window, and wait 10 minutes, then reboot, and run another SFC scan - post the new log.

  • Tampered File: %systemroot%\system32\sppuinotify.dll|sppuinotify.dll.mui

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

    then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

  • Did both; sfc said there were errors -- unspecified -- that it wasn't able to fix.

I'll work on a fix protocol for these and get back to you a bit later.

  • Hmmm - we need to run the CheckSUR tool as well to be able to fix one of the problems...

Please download and save  the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.

The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file  - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

  • It looks like something went wrong with the file replacements - all the original errors are still there.

Did  you extract the file properly?

Please run the following commands in a Command Prompt window....

    DIR C:\miraa

    DIR C:\Windows\Winssxs\mir*.*

    What responses do you get?

  • ...that would be because I apparently mistyped the command!  (In utterly shocking news, computers aren't telepathic and only do what you tell them to, not what you want them to.  Who'da thunk.)  Let me try that again...

  • Ooops! - I goofed on one of the repair files.....

It's too late for me to do anything about it tonight - back tomorrow when my eyes have lost their squareness!

I'll deal with them now :)

  • I've uploaded a file - mirac.zip - to my SkyDrive at  Noel's SkyDrive

    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…

Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder  mirac in the same place.

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

  • Great - the CheckSUR is now completely clear ;)

Please try running another SFC /SCANNOW, just in case we've shaken anything loose- post the new CBS.log and I'll try and find the clue to your problem.

Please also post a new MGADiag report.

    net stop cryptsvc
    ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2\edb.log *.tst
    net start cryptsvc

exit the window, and wait 10 minutes, then reboot, and run another SFC scan - post the new log.
