What's a vent server? If it's some kind of web server you should be able to do that WHS has IIS. However please note that installing applications other than Home Server Add-ins is not supported and may break (specific functionality of) your homeserver.

Specifically regarding Ventrilo, please follow the directions in the Ventrilo setup instructions for configuring your server to run as a service. This is unsupported on Windows Home Server, because by design you should never use the desktop on the server, but it should cause no problems. You are, however, accepting a certain level of risk.

vent server is ventrillo. the server looks like a little DOS window when you run it.
Does the media smart have like a desktop....start menu.....and of that? i would not need to install the program. just place the folder on the server and put the shortcut in startup so the server runs it.Monday, May 4, 2009 9:49 PM -

Yes, it does. It's accessible through Remote Desktop. However, as brubber already said, anything requiring server desktop access is unsupported on WHS.

I will attempt to search on how to connect to my server via remote desktop. if you happen to see this post and know a link that could help that would be cool.Tuesday, May 5, 2009 10:53 PM

it seems like this is not a recommended approach to connect to your WHS. Or is more of an attempt for HP/WHS to control how you connect to your server. This seems like a more powerful way for someone to fully utilize their WHS comp.
I dont get why is so looked down upon. or how it may hurt your server.Tuesday, May 5, 2009 11:07 PM -

Because there are a number of familiar tools exposed through a desktop session that will damage or destroy Windows Home Server functionality: things like the Disk Management MMC snap-in, user management outside of the console, share management likewise, a fair number of command line utilities, etc.

So it's unsupported, and at your own risk.

For remote desktop
On a Windows client do Start, Run, type mstsc.exe and Hit Enter.
Computer = name or IP address of your WHS
User = Administrator
Password = your WHS console password
If you know what you're doing the risk of missing up your server is fairly low. If you don't know what you're doing there's a serious risk you will have to reinstall the server at some point in time.Wednesday, May 6, 2009 7:21 AMModerator
