Failed to start Live Mesh beta

Question
-
Hello, I was using Live Mesh on my Vista home premium 64bit for about a month without a significant problems but one day suddendly it failed to start and fails everytime I start the computer - there is a message in the tray - Failed to start Live Mesh. Click here to restart, but when I click it it fails again after about 10seconds. I reinstalled it via the repair option in add/remove programs and it fixed itself. But after the computer restart it failed again! If I click collect livemesh logs the window flashes and no logs are created on the desktop...
Should I uninstall it and install again? I guess it will forget my synchronised folders even if it worked right?Sunday, January 3, 2010 1:12 PM

Your best bet is to remove the device from the Mesh and uninstall the client.
There are instructions within this thread - http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/LiveMesh/thread/ed5676d9-59a4-4203-9191-d7f0d72f467b - that describe how to remove Live Mesh manually if needed.
Then I would reinstall and set up the folders once again.
If that fails to resolve the problem, you should submit a bug report:
How to Submit Bugs and Live Mesh Logs
Note that you may not receive a response to the bug report, though. It will be transferred to the internal system to be assigned to the appropriate development group.

and here it is again! WTH? I am beginning to be quite upset with this. Collect live mesh logs function does not create any file and this issue is probably rare also, because it is not listed in Live Mesh Known Issues. I have a lot of files in c:\Users\vitas\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Live Mesh\, shall I try to delete something from there or send something to you guys to investigate, or shall I just settle myself with the fact that this software is ____? :(Friday, March 12, 2010 10:29 PM

I'm sorry for the late reply. I wish that I could offer some advice to you, but I fear that filing a bug report with logs collected automatically or manually at this point isn't going to yield a response from the developers. I'm afraid that you are probably going to have to settle and wait for an update to see if a new version resolves this ongoing issue for you.
I've experienced it once on a Windows 7 machine and a reinstall was the solution, but I have no clue why it failed to begin with.

Hello, the log files could not be collected becase the regkey HKCU\Software\Classes\Wow6432Node\CLSID\%REGGUID%\LocalServer32 did not exist. I have ran the BAT file in command line so I saw the error message.
Now after another reinstall (with removing of the device from the mesh) it runs again and the collectlogfiles works, because HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{27FFBBFB-4F8B-4a0a-ABBD-9DAE4CDB7F13}\LocalServer32
is there. I am going to back it up and when it crashes again I will try to fix it by restoring this one...(if it disappears again)Tuesday, March 16, 2010 10:30 AM -
So, why would that key be disappearing? Are you running a registry cleaner of similar program?

You are asking me? :) I don't run anything like that. My computer runs quite fine so I did not need that kind of tuning yet.
I have set auditing to that registry key. It seems moemonitor.exe reads this key every 5 seconds :o Now I changed it only to audit setvalue and delete, so I may be able to see what happens when something happens...Wednesday, March 17, 2010 6:50 PM -
I guess that would have been a rhetorical question. :-) I was probably echoing what you were thinking, based on your observation that the key disappeared.

Live Mesh simply does not work.
If this is the basis of the new directions for Microsoft, I'm selling my shares.
Mesh is junk.

Your post is not very useful, though you are entitled to your opinion and even to share it.Live Mesh works fine, albeit with a few glitches, on my computers and has for quite some time.
If you are having a problem, providing some specifics might elicit some ideas for things to try to resolve them.

Hi,
I've been using Mesh almost 1 year and I haven't had any problem with the 2 computers that I synchronize, but since I week ago I couldn't connect one of the PC and I get the message: Live Mesh failed to start. I didn't do or change anything in that computer, it was really unexpected. Now I just have one PC running Mesh fine. Somebody can help me?
Thanks.

When this happens and a reboot does not resolve it, go to www.mesh.com and remove the problem device from the Mesh. Then, uninstall and reinstall Live Mesh on that machine. Yes, unfortunately, you will need to reconfigure the sync folders when they are offered to the reinstalled machine.-steve

hi,
I start using Mesh new but I have a problem. I install program but it give a message like "failed to start...." I try that you said and I uninstall and reinstall but I have still same problem. what can I do to correct this?? by the way, unfortunately I don't know English very well so please be clear

Please tell us more about your system, Mert ILGIN.
What operating system? Service pack?
Have you ever had the early IE8 beta/preview on this machine?
There are several reasons for the "failed to start" error. If a reinstall does not resolve it and Live Mesh has never worked on this machine, it is hard to diagnose the problem. You may need to wait for the next beta update to see if it will work on your machine.

I don't know...is this software just a joke which will be soon replaced by something serious? Now Livemesh fails to start on all of my computers in my mesh! I have three machines in it: Vista 64bit SP2 ENG and the others are Win XP pro SP3...
General question: is there a global outage on LiveMesh now or did just all three of my connected machines got some anti livemesh virus or something?
That registry key I was talking about before still exists... at least on this computer I am typing from. I did not check the others yet, but the problem seems to be elsewhere...

I am not aware of any outages yesterday. I would suspect one of two problems -
1. something on your end changed or is an issue - perhaps network connectivity or security software updating
2. something on the Live Mesh servers for your account
The only way to determine what happened would be to see your logs - you can submit them with a bug report on Connect.
How to Submit Bugs and Live Mesh Logs
Note that you may not receive a response to the bug report, though. It will be transferred to the internal system to be assigned to the appropriate development group.
As to your initial question, Live Mesh is still a beta and no, it isn't a joke. It is pending an update, though. A number of rumors indicate that Live Mesh and Live Sync will merge in the upcoming Wave4 beta release of Windows Live services and programs. As for when this will happen, all I know is that we expect something in the near future.
Is your problem persisting today?
And, reading through the original posts in this thread, how has Mesh behaved for you over the few months since your last post before your latest issue?

Hello thanks for the reply. I am quite happy to hear that microsoft somehow tries to clarify this variety of similar yet still quite different and uncompatible services like livesync, livemesh or skydrive. That could drive one mad to distinguish what should be used for what :)
The problem is still there and now I am writing from my notebook - livemesh is still starting. What was it doing since my last post? It was working and peacefully sitting in tray while sometimes synchronysing files. Occasionally I used it to connect via it's remote desktop.
I have submitted the problem via Microsoft Connect since I was finally able to collect logs (at least on this machine...)

Thanks for the update and for submitting your logs. I am sorry that you've once again encountered issues with Live Mesh and if it has been working and suddenly ceased, and nothing has changed on your end, I have to assume it is a service/connectivity issue. I don't know if you'll hear back on the log submission, but do let us know if it starts working again or if you get a response identifying the cause of the problem.
And, hopefully, we'll see an update in the not too distant future.
