Installing CRM 2011 web services on different server to CRM? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are currently working with a client who have very strict internal policies around external access to systems but are wanting to use a 3rd party marketing tool (ClickDimensions) with CRM 2011 without setting up IFD.

ClickDimensions requires external access to CRM via web services however the client's policy is not to allow direct external communication to an internal application, instead a component needs to be added to the DMZ as a go-between.

Is there any way that CRM's web services can be installed on a different server to the rest of the application enabling the CRM server to be completely internal and only the web services to be exposed?

Or is there another alternative such as a custom intermediary web service that just relays the messages both ways?

  • This is a little bit tricky because the CRM Web Services reside in a sub-directory of the CRM Web Application.

    You could (possibly) however:

    1. Install the CRM Front End Services on two Servers (Internal and External) - a single CRM 2011 Deployment can have multiple Front End Servers
    2. Disallow access to all but the /XrmServices/... folder on the External Server

  • Thanks for the reply,

That may be an option, I'll go back to the client's architects and see if that would be allowed.
