Formerly Genuine Windows now not recognized as valid RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I've had my computer for ~3 years, my windows has been genuine that entire time, but is apparently no longer recognized as genuine. I have no idea why this is the case, and no longer have any of the CDs and whatnot that were used to install the OS. I believe I'm supposed to paste the diagnostic report here, so here ya go:

  • OK - now we'll have to do some file-checking...

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

     CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at the next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size  of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally  (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Upload the CBS.log file (compressed, please!) to your OneDrive or DropBox Public folder, and post a link - also post a new MGADiag report.

  • Download and install the Intel Chipset drivers for Windows 7 and your specific MSI notebook model, then restart your PC twice. Run a new MGA report and post it here. Thanks!

  • There were problems with one of yesterday's updates - KB3004394

If you uninstall it, that may cure the problem

  • No I don't think that would fix it, this problem is more than a day old, and I actually haven't installed the most recent update yet.
    Friday, December 12, 2014 4:57 AM
  • In that case try this...

Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt

    NET STOP CRYPTSVC
    REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CATROOT2 CATROOT2OLD
    NET START CRYPTSVC

once complete, leave the system alone for at least an hour to rebuild the database, then reboot, and run another MGADiag report and post the results.

Note that this may delete your Update History - but all updates will remain installed, and can be viewed in the Installed Updates listing.

  • Ok, I think that the prompts worked fine, but I'm not 100% since I couldnt access the catroot directory to check that the file had been renamed. Anyways, here's the latest Diagnostic Report:

  • That seems to have cured the errors - are you still seeing non-genuine notifications?

You appear to have run SFC twice - the first time, it managed to fix the following problems...

The second time, it found nothing amiss.

  • I haven't seen any of the non-genuine Windows errors, but my copy of Microsoft Office still thinks it's unregistered. How would I go about fixing that problem? Thank you so much for your continued help.

  • What AV are you using?

Please disable real-time scanning/protection and reboot

If the notification has disappeared, re-enable real-time scanning and reboot again

If the notification is still present, first check whether the real-time scanning is still switched off. If so, then re-enable it and post the result. If it's turned itself back on then tell me or try again using a different disable option.

    Post back with the results
