Windows Not Genuine Notification RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased my computer from Office Depot. It was a demo unit and was the last of its model. Since it was exactly what I was looking for at a good price, I was willing to put up with a couple of scratches on the finish. What I didn't realize was that they had lost some of the disks and they were not in the box with my computer when i made the purchase.

A year after I purchased the computer, I had an attachment wipe out my registry while on business in Malaysia.

Since I had what I thought was the product key on the sticker on the bottom of my computer I just had the local shop reload my windows XP using that key. Everything was great until this month when I was notified about the program being a illegal copy.

Now I did pay for the software with the computer. How can I resolve this without purchasing again?

The current Product Key being used on your system is non-genuine for one of two reasons:

    - The key was made using a non-Microsoft sanctioned Key Generator

    - The key was reported lost or stolen from the original purchaser.

Can you verify that your COA matches your Product Key? If it does not you can try the following:

1 - Reinstall Windows so your COA matches your Product Key (install using your COA as the Product Key) - This is the preferred method by Microsoft, as it will be a fresh copy, void of potential hacked binary files and security loops that may have been created to bypass WGA. We know this is usually not the user preference, but it is the safest method.

The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for users attempting to change their current non-genuine Product Key to a genuine COA sticker or genuine Product Key – all without a reinstall! http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=50346&clcid=0x409

Note: This is provided no core system files are corrupted. If they are you will need to complete a clean install of your system.

If your COA does match the product key being used on your system I recommend filing a counterfeit report, it MAY be a high quality counterfeit (which MAY qualify you for a *free* WGA kit) – Counterfeit report is located here: http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/Reporting.mspx

  • Contact the manufacturer of your computer and request their OEM designed Windows XP recovery or restore CD for Windows XP, then perform a "clean install".

Also, your copy of Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage is non-genuine. You'll need to uninstall it, then visit a nearby store that sells computer software and purchase a genuine version of Microsoft Office.

  • Dozer7,

Here's a link to buy a recovery DVD for your computer:  http://servicesales.sel.sony.com/web/productSearch.do

Search on your model number (VGN-S360P) in the search box in the upper right and you will get the page that lists the recovery DVD for $11.95 which if you ask me is a pretty good price!
