I wish Lori MS had given us a link for the “cd trial version of OneCare” because we’ve had several requests for a deployable package that didn’t require an internet connection, and I couldn’t find anything at all.
The error reporting in OneCare isn’t always very informative, and searches for the hexadecimal component of this error code turn up empty, so if anyone really knows what this specific error code means, they’re apparently not telling. The OneCare online Help Center isn't much help either, and doesn’t provide any information at all on the 0018 class of installation errors. But we do know that the 0018 errors aren’t directly related to connectivity issues the way that 0014 errors are. So assuming that your Internet connection is viable, here are some things you could try:
1.) If you haven’t been doing much downloading, then you might not have the latest Windows updates installed. The minimum installation requirement for OneCare is Windows XP with Service Pack 2. You should further update with all of the “critical” updates identified by Windows Update.
2.) Try scanning for malware with the OneCare online Protection Scan, since malware would be one potential source of the problem: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm
3.) Follow the troubleshooting steps outlined in this Knowledge Base article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/910656
4.) Contact OneCare Support for help: http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2421771&SiteID=2

CapnRon77,
Thank you for visiting the OneCare Program forums.
Here is a link to the system requirements for OneCare:
http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-us/purchase/sysreq.htm?pc=CreditCard
One of the system requirements is that OneCare must be installed on a 56 kpbs or faster Internet Connection.
You may have to get a cd trial version of OneCare.

For the record, GreginMich, I am not aware of any offline installer and I believe Lori mis-spoke as OneCare *always* requires a live Internet connection to install the latest bits during the installation process, no matter what the source is - CD or download. Further, there is no trial vs. CD as both are the exact same installer and will put OneCare in trial mode until it is activated. If OneCare was installed on the PC previously, the installer detects this and you get a 15 day trial. If it is installed from CD, you get a 15 day trial. If you download the install and OneCare has never been installed on that PC before, you get a 90 day trial period.

Thanks everybody! I've tried a few more installs, gotten different error codes, and contacted support... all to little avail. They gave me lots of troubleshooting hints, but I've determined the problem lies in our dialup connection (it usually connects BETWEEN 50 and 56kbps, but rarely at the fast end of the range) so the install download takes well over 6 hours! Of course, any little glitch in the line interrupts the connection, and all download progress is completely lost. I've asked about an install disc that would at least reduce the download time, but apaprently none exists. We're about ready to just say (yet again) screw Microsoft and take the program back to Costco. TrendMicro works great on my laptop, looks like it's going on the desktop too since Microsoft isn't interested in making their product useable.Tuesday, October 7, 2008 4:33 PM

I'm sorry to read of the continued problems you've encountered with this and certainly understand your reasoning for giving up on OneCare for this machine. I've installed over dial-up, with a connection speed similar to yours, and it has taken about 2 to 3 hours. However, as you noted, any glitch that causes the connection to fail will cause the install to fail.
As I noted before, the installation always happens via a live Internet connection. While OneCare will work and update with a dial-up connection, I think I would recommend that you go ahead and return the copy for a refund, if possible, since you may well encounter more problems down the road with the larger program updates over that dial-up connection. If Costco won't issue the refund,
